| The Mixtape - 29 September 2007
I just don't know how I cram so much music in 2 hours ...
Along with some new songs from British bands including The Hot Puppies, Soft Hearted
Scientists, British Sea Power and the Dead 60s, we had a bit of a Scandinavian thing going
tonight too:
Monomen - a band from
Sörumsand, Norway who do the new wave/electronica thing just a little bit better than some of
the posers who do it from round these parts. Extra points as their myspace address includes a
homage to the classic analog synth, the Roland TR-707.
múm - with a small m,
not a big M - and pronounced "moom", or if you believe their Myspace, "miooyyuujm". I've been
plucking up courage to play them for weeks, because they are not very radio-friendly in an
unbelievably twee kind of way. However I'm full of Red Bull (again) so I decided to go for it
today.
Fast Computers -
this is cheating really as they come from Oregon, but how can you resist a song called "Sweden
Hasn't Changed, You Have"? Even if they are part of the most annoyingly-named music genre
ever*, "math rock"?
I dug out a few albums from 1990 and played songs from the Inspiral Carpets' debut - Life; one
from short-lived American power-pop combo Jellyfish; the one and only chart-botherer from
They Might Be Giants and one from Led Zeppelin/reggae fusioneers Dread Zeppelin - all of
which I played to death (ouch) 17 years ago!
And finally, thanks to everyone tuning in not just on FM but on the internet, nice to know Phoenix
FM is pretty popular in Shanghai these days! Here's today's random chatroom exchange:
JJ: Cool British accent, which country are you from?
Me: Britain.
That one won it over Mrs Eddie Curry, who sent me a message to ask for my Nectar card
number. Yes, while I was doing a show.
