Malcolm Webb; President of Brentwood Cricket Club

Xanthe Bearman was joined in the Phoenix FM studio by Malcolm Webb, the President of Brentwood CC where he has been a member since 1976.

Founded in 1881 the Cricket Club has approximately 100 senior members and a further 225 junior members.  They run six Saturday sides, all in the Essex League and one Sunday side

Brentwood Cricket Club is very much a community club with a long standing commitment to youth development.  Malcolm explained what the ECB ClubMark accreditation meant, as Brentwood CC was one of the first clubs in Essex to be awarded this.

The club demonstrated that they are fully equipped in every sense to look after youngsters and promote cricket to the youth of the community.   To comply with ClubMark regulations they have a Child Welfare Officer and they ensure that sufficient qualified coaches and supplementary helpers are always available to look after all of the colts.
All of the coaches and helpers at Brentwood CC have undergone Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks and the coaches have taken first aid courses in addition to their cricket coaching courses.
You can rest assured that your children are in safe hands at the club.

Xanthe & Malcolm also talked about being one of the ECB's "Focus Clubs" in Essex.
The ECB invited every first-class county to submit details of clubs in their county who they believed were torch-bearers for cricket for the future - especially in terms of youth development.
The 38 County Boards underwent an intensive two-year planning process to identify 1,453 Focus Clubs nationwide. Essex, through Essex County Cricket Board, selected Brentwood CC as one of their chosen few. A Focus Club is one that has been identified for a clear strategic reason, and one that is committed to long-term junior development.

ClubSX has similar objectives to ClubMark but is Essex-based, rather than being a national initiative. We had to meet a set of criteria, laid down by the county, to ensure that the club is run with sufficient levels of professionalism and safety. Brentwood CC received 'Gold' accreditation.

Malcolm talked about the results that the various teams had this season.  The results and more information can be found at the clubs website: www.brentwoodcc.co.uk

Several England players have worn the Club's colours over recent years, for example Nick Knight (captain of Warwickshire from 2003 to 2005 & World Cup debut in the 2003 tournament) and Gavin Hamilton (played for Yorkshire and Scotland during the 1999 World Cup which led new England coach Duncan Fletcher to select him for England's 99/00 tour of South Africa)

There is a thriving social scene at Brentwood CC, and even if you don't play, spectators are always welcome. There is no admission charge and refreshments are available. In addition to being able to watch a high standard of cricket you will find the pleasant environs of the Old County Ground to be one of the most tranquil and beautiful locations in the Brentwood area.

Malcolm also talked about the importance of links to local schools.  For further information call 01277 211424 for the Colts teams, or 01277 262370 for adults or further information about the club.

It was a fascinating chat, and Malcolm was not only very informative, but great fun to meet! Our thanks to Malcolm Webb for taking the time to visit Phoenix FM.
