Billericay Town FC - Monday 27th August Round Up
BILLERICAY TOWN 1-1 CHELMSFORD
It's all square in the local derby, as Billericay and Chelmsford score a penalty apiece to share the spoils. Joe Flack is Billericay's marksman.
Billericay and Chelmsford fought out a typically tense local derby on bank holiday Monday, with a penalty apiece the only goals as both 'keepers impressed. The first half saw plenty of bright approach play from both sides, although the final ball was all to often snuffed out by the central defenders, all four of whom played well. Billericay were guilty of straying into offside positions all too often, whilst a header from Rikki Holmes that hit the Billericay cross bar would not have counted had it gone in, for the same reason.
The game really came to life after the half time break. Chelmsford came out with plenty of purpose, and had already forced a series of corners when Darren Blewitt was harshly adjudged to have held Kezie Ibe and conceded a penalty. Despite being closest to the action, the decision was only given on the word of the linesman who was some way from the offence. Up stepped Ben Ainsley to score from the spot.
The lead was short lived however, as minutes later Billericay were awarded a spot kick of their own when Jamie Dormer burst into the area only to be tripped by Ben Sedgemore. Lee Hodges saw his spot kick well saved by Danny Gay, but again the linesman stepped into the action and flagged to say he had come off his line before Hodges kicked the ball. For the re-take Billericay switched to Joe Flack who made no mistake.
The penalties sparked the game into life, and both sides had chances with Billy McMahon making a good save from a Lee Protheroe free kick and a Kezie Ibe header, whilst at the other end Danny Gay made an equally important save to tip a Flack header over the bar. The heat took it's toll near the end of the game, although Flack did shoot over late on for the home side.
