SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH ALLEN FORD - 7.7.7

SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH ALLEN FORD - 7.7.7 Upstairs or downstairs for Brentwood's Post Office? That was the debate on today's Saturday Pitstop following the revelation that the Post Office's planned Spring 2008 move into WHSmith involves the counters going upstairs. Brentwood Access Group's Sue Higgins came on air, revealing that Post Office access had been on the agenda of the group's very first meeting in 1976. Having achieved easier access into the existing High Street Post Office, with parking available outside the door, the group is bracing itself for another fight over the new one. WHSmith's statement to Phoenix FM said: "The location of the Post Office within our premises will be compliant with legislation. The store has automatic doors and customers will be able to access the new Post Office via a wide staircase and a lift. Should a customer have a particularly large wheelchair or scooter, a collapsible wheelchair will be available to use in the lift." For Sue Higgins this wasn't good enough. She cited examples of Brentwood residents who, having got into their own wheelchair or scooter at the start of their journey, weren't capable of easily switching transport to reach the first-floor Post Office. Brentwood Access Group can be contacted on 01277 212361. Public consultation on the Post Office plans began mid-June. To input your views, email via www.postoffice.co.uk or phone 08457 223344.
