BILLERICAY'S CATER MUSEUM ON SATURDAY PITSTOP - JUNE 23, 2007

Billericay's Cater Museum is open from 2pm every afternoon except Sundays. Free of charge to enter, the display of Victorian and Edwardian Billericay and Essex artefacts is at 74 High Street. The collection was started by William Alexander Cater, a Billericay man of means who spent his life amassing archealogical treasures, pottery and coins. After his death, William Cater's housekeeper-turned-wife was intent on finding a permanent home for the Cater collection and snapped up the period property at 74 High Street for conversion into a museum. The resulting Cater Museum opened in 1960 and Saturday Pitstop guest on June 23, Christine Brewster, has been curator for six years. She described the museum's kitchen, parlour and bedroom layout and invited listeners to an August 4/5 crafts fair in the gardens behind 74 High Street, Billericay.
