Kitsch Klassics playlist 10th June 2007 , from Dallas' baby Christopher to skateboarding ducks...
'Kitsch - objects, or design considered to be excessively garish or sentimental, but appreciated in an ironic or knowing way (with thanks to the Oxford English Dictionary).'
Well that kind of sums up this show really ! As Alex Fletcher was unable to make her usual 6-8pm slot this evening I gladly stepped in like the true gent I am to present a second edition of an occasional show that I like to call Kitsch Klassics (yes that's the correct spelling) which is basically an affectionate & oh so slightly irreverent look back on that era that was the 1970's - 1980's & all things paisley patterned & large shoulder pad in between. If you were a kid & teenager during this time you'll appreciate some of the knowing asides & triv that were mentioned in this edition.
I was glad this time to welcome my guest David Martin from west London who's a budding new comedy writer & stand-up performer & a bit of an aficionado on all things 'kitsch' from this time & like me, he has great affection for the period but doesn't take it at all seriously. Oh no.....
What did we talk about? Well amongst other things;
The Rubiks Cube, classic comedy from Morecombe & Wise to Tommy Cooper, Eamon Andrews - that now forgotten giant of early British TV, magazine shows such as Today on ITV & Nationwide on BBC1 & their infamous features on the Sex Pistols & skateboarding ducks (no, really, we had to make our own entertainment in those days). The sad demise of Brian Connelly of The Sweet, Dinky & Corgi toys, the genius puppet shows of Gerry Anderson (especially Thunderbirds & Captain Scarlet), Cabbage Patch Dolls, Dallas & 'baby Christopher' (or was he a cabbage patch doll?), Ben Elton, Harry Enfield & the Friday & Saturday Night Live show, Spitting Image, Marine Boy, This Is Your Life, almost meeting George Michael in Bond Street & attending the video recording of 'I'm Your Man' at the old Marquee.
Well, as George Michael once sang "if you were there, you'd know...."
