County Elections: Gains For Lib Dems in Brentwood

Phoenix FM's Steve Mead and Alex Fletcher spoke to the four victorious councillors on the night. You can listen to the interviews again here: Barry Aspinell : David Kendall : Ann Naylor : John Roberts

In the county elections there were two gains for the Lib Dems, who took Brentwood North and Brentwood South from the Conservatives.

In Brentwood North Barry Aspinell increased his party's share of the vote from 30% in 2005 to 45% as he defeated sitting councillor Phil Baker by 301 votes.

Brentwood South was much closer, with the current leader of Brentwood Liberal Democrats, David Kendall, uprooting the incumbent Lionel Lee by just 7 votes.

The presence of the BNP, who won 501 votes in Brentwood South, no doubt swayed the result. The party took 7.1% of the votes across the four Brentwood wards.

The Conservatives held onto Brentwood Hutton and Brentwood Rural, with John Roberts in Hutton increasing his share of the vote by 7%. Brentwood Rural also saw challenges from UKIP - who polled 21.4% to finish in second place - and the English Democrats.

Labour took just 7.3% of the vote across all four Brentwood wards.
