You may remember that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman completed a round the world trip on Motorcycle! But the guest on Bear at Lunchtime beat them to it, without a back-up team, and only a miniscule budget!
The guest in question was Simon Harby from Bupa Hartswood, and the Bear had a fascinating chat with him about his amazing 30-month trip.
Simon Harby and wife Suzi left England on two motorcycles on 9 December 2002, heading down the west coast of France and the west side of Spain, taking the ferry across the Straits of Gibraltar to North Africa.
They encountered some problems, (in Mauritania Simon had a bad accident, hitting a donkey and smashing his motorbike) and had some fantastic experiences. During the trip, Simon & Suzi raised funds and awareness for the charity ORBIS UK.
ORBIS is an international development organisation that works to eliminate avoidable blindness in developing countries where at least 90 percent of the blind and visually impaired reside. For further information go to www.orbis.org.uk
It’s an amazing story, and Xanthe was delighted that Simon took the time to share it with Phoenix FM.
