Brentwood Heritage Open DaysPHOENIX FM TUNED IN FOR BRENTWOOD HERITAGE OPEN DAYS ![]() Brentwood's story has been told in words and pictures on six boards on display at Phoenix FM, in the Baytree Centre, and at funeral directors Bennetts, at 120 High Street. The panels are based on the Pictorial History of Brentwood book by John Fryer and part funded by Brentwood Town Centre Partnership, which Phoenix FM is part of. The Partnership, developing Brentwood centre for visitors, residents and businesses alike, sponsors the annual Heritage Open Days – running this year from September 11 to 14. As well as celebrating the Open Days by showing off the history story boards, the radio station will also be one of 14 Brentwood attractions opening its doors to the public. Phoenix FM is welcoming listeners into its studios all day on September 11. "Having broadcast in Brentwood since 1996, and full-time since March last year, we're very much part of Brentwood's heritage," said Steve Mead, station manager. "Phoenix FM's studios are on a busy town centre thoroughfare – perfect for showing the heritage boards to the most people possible. Hopefully just as many will take an interest in the inner workings of their community station when we have our own open day on September 11." Phoenix FM has boards covering 1100 to 1925, including the chapel of St Thomas a Becket built in 1221 on the pilgrimage route to Canterbury. For 1837, Lord Petre giving land in Ingrave Road for a Roman Catholic church is shown. The Post Office on the corner of Brentwood High Street and St Thomas Road – which this year moved into the Baytree Centre's WHSmith – was built in 1891, say the Phoenix FM boards. The period 1925 to the present day is depicted a short walk from Phoenix FM at the southern end of the High Street. There Bennetts' display has the town's London Road police station built in 1937 and Morecombe and Wise coming to town in 1978 (to open new furniture store Cooper's). The boards conclude with present day news including last October's go ahead for the Brentwood to Berkshire £16 billion Crossrail route. Crossrail is one of the projects shaping Brentwood's future, with work scheduled to start in 2010 and first trains running by 2017. ![]() See www.brentwood.gov.uk/index.php?cid=134 for more on Brentwood's 2008 Heritage Open Days.
