Latitude 2008

Another year, another great festival - Latitude always seems to have the best bands and the most relaxed attitude of all the big ones, and the Phoenix FM team were out in force soaking up the mild sun and slight rain!

Listen to these interviews again:

Day 1 - Highlights

British Sea Power had everything expected of them - Bulgarian backing singers, air raid sirens and a good smattering of old and new including a number of songs from the Mercury-nominated album Do You Like Rock Music?

Howling Bells have become a down-the-order-at-festivals favourite and the Aussie slightly-goth-but-not-quite rockers managed to pack out the Uncut tent for their explosive set.

Julian Cope kept the audience waiting and waiting and waiting, and for some reason decided to have a large tarpaulin on stage, held up by his road crew, while he was waiting to go on. There wasn't much behind it though, just some drums - lots of drums - and a reinforced mike stand that he spent most of the time swinging on. the set did include a rare Teardrop Explodes song - Sleeping Gas - and a bit of random instrument smashing too.

Headliners Franz Ferdinand kept a big crowd in the late night drizzle - a few new songs from the forthcoming third album, lots of hit singles to keep the general crowd happy and a masterful cover of Hall and Oates' Maneater were the standouts for us.

Day 2 - Highlights

Phoenix FM favourites Captain delivered a great but short six-song set including Broke and current single Keep An Open Mind.

Suffolk's Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds cemented their "ones to watch" status with a riotous set which included recent "hit" Slow Kids. They also gave us a bewildering interview the following morning before heading off to the BBC jalopy to record an acoustic set.

We were lucky to catch the wonderful Fairey Band in the TV tent during the early evening. The band have actually been going since 1937 - how many bands there can say that? Obviously not with its original line-up, the current line up treated the audience to its Acid Brass set - brass band covers of Nitro Deluxe, 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald and other acid classics!

Again the headliner was among the highlights - Sigur Ros started their set with the majestic Svefn-G-Englar and I don't think I've heard them sounding better - Latitude's huge natural amphitheatre really suited their sound. Hoppipola was probably one of the highlights of the whole weekend for us.

Day 3 - Highlights

The biggest crowd of the whole weekend seemed to settle at the main stage at noon for the solo performance of Joanna Newsom. Taking away the band, leaving her just with harp or piano, seemed to make the songs stand out more than usual. And yes she did forget the words on her songs a few times and the audience had to help her out - but that just made it a better show in our opinion!>

Sunday brought us two treats from the Transgressive stable. First up, Jeremy Warmsley showed the In The Woods crowd why he's regarded as such a good singer/songwriter - his songs are always easy to enjoy even if you're unfamiliar with his work.

Infinitely more enjoyable than a Sex Pistols concert, Foals treated the main stage to a wonderful set which showed why they're considered one of the bands of the moment. Cassius - dedicated to "Lydon's meatheads" - and Red Socks Pugie were the stand out songs.

Glasvegas were the other highlight for the Sunday Phoenix team - a band in our opinion justify the hype surrounding them this year. Songs such as Go Square Go and Geraldine have had plenty of airplay from us this year and hearing the songs live didn't make them any less great in our book!
