THE EASTGATE SUMMER CHILDREN’S APPEAL 2008

THE EASTGATE SUMMER CHILDREN’S APPEAL 2008

The Eastgate Cycle Team are hopefully safely in Paris as you read this.  The team left Eastgate early on Thursday morning for a four day cycle event in aid of Action Medical Research.  The boys joined a group of 450 Action Cyclists in Kent and, hopefully, arrived together in Calais on Thursday night.

The Team Departs

The Paris team were joined in the shopping mall by a home team of Eastgate staff and retailers cycling the same distance to Paris on exercise bikes. The road cyclists will cover over 300 miles and hoped to arrive at the Eiffel Tower on Saturday, the day before the arrival of the Tour de France.

The Eastgate team of five actually cycled over 800 miles, that's 500 more than was required to get to Paris! They were supported by the Police and Club Kingswood locally.

Some of those who made up the team were Tony, Dennis, Richard (who completed over 180 miles himself), Ashley and Charlie from the Ann Summers store, Gary Butler from Sports World and Sandra & Sharon who are both domestic cleaners. Phoenix FM's Bryan Powis was on hand to support the proceedings and provide encouragement to the team of exercise bicyclists.

Touching Tiny Lives

The Eastgate staff are raising money this year for prematurely born babies, for which they are buying an incubator at Basildon Hospital, and support for Action Medical Research.

Each year in the UK 70,000 newborn babies need special care. Sadly, 50,000 babies are born prematurely. Tragically, more than 25 premature babies die every week because they were born too soon. The Touching Tiny Lives campaign funds over 30 vital projects to help find the answers to life-threatening pregnancy complications, and help sick and vulnerable babies.

If you are interested in knowing more, the campaign’s website is within that of the registered charity Action Medical Research: www.action.org.uk/research.
