The Saturday Kickabout Roundup - 19 July 2008
As always, Dan Westram any I squeezed as much local, national and international sporting news into two hours.
The third round of the 137th Open saw 53 year old Greg Norman battle for the lead along with Korea's KJ Choi. At day 2 of the second test at Headingley, South Africa appeared to have the measure of England when rain stopped play.
Another Grand Prix weekend, with Lewis Hamilton on pole for the German Grand Prix, this time alongside the Ferrari of Philipe Massa. At the halfway stage this is looking to be the closest season for decades as three drivers share the same number of points in the drivers' World Championship.
We brought news of local cricket and football, as the pre-season frendlies are in full flow. News also of Georgie Da Costa and Paul Gardiner winning the Billericay Tennis Club Championships.
Horndon boxer John McDermott lost his challenge for the British Heavyweight Title in Dagenham on Friday, after a controversial points victory to Danny Williams.
With just twenty days to go until the Beijing Olympics, we had confirmation that Tyrone Edgar will be competing in the individual 100m, Edgar had already been chosen for the relay. Other Essex Beagles athletes going to Beijing are Mo Farrah (5000m), Steve Lewis (pole vault), Chris Tomlinson (long jump) and Christine Ohuruogu (400m and 4x400m relay). Local swimmer Mark Forster, at the age of 38, has set himself a goal of winning his first Olympic medal in the 50m freestyle.
Join us every Saturday from 4.00-6.00 in association with Murphy's Sports Bar.
