The Saturday Kickabout Roundup - 12 July 2008

Another action-packed show as the Saturday Kickabout held July's Community Football Surgery, with Mike Burchett.

The main areas discussed with Mike included deadlines for getting children involved in football, with Mike advising to contact your local club as soon as possible. Although the season starts in September, many clubs have deadlines around early August. He also stressed how many more girls are competing these days, especially with the amount of interest football gets compared with other sports.

We also discussed the FA advice on police checks for adults involved with the running of the local clubs, with Mike pointing out that The FA require their own checks, even if the adult is a schoolteacher or a police officer.

Mike will be back in August, amongst other things we will be featuring the FA's new rules for the 2008-09 season, that any type of football competition for children aged under 8 has been banned. To have your say on this, and to get Mike's reaction, contact the show direct by emailing sport@phoenixfm.com.

It was a normal summer Saturday with news of rain stopping play in the 2nd day of Essex's County Championship match at Glamorgan.  We also covered England's good showing in the 3rd day of the 1st test against South Africa at Lord's.

Local Cricket, with Brentwood traveling to bottom of the table Chingford, was featured along with news of Horndon boxer John McDermott a week before he fights Danny Williams in Dagenham.

As usual, Dan Westram brought plenty of local and national news as it happened, along with ripening rumours including news of former Southend man Freddie Eastwood as his transfer from Wolves to Coventry was announced.

Join the Sports Team every Saturday from 4-6PM.
