SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH ESSEX FORD BILLERICAY – 10.5.8
Our guest was bowler Les Field from Central Essex Bowling Club, which plays at King George's playing field, Ingrave Road, Brentwood.
Les came on air ahead of the club's May 11 open day, which has since happened and been a success – with the secretary running out of application forms to give to prospective new members.
Les and the club were only too aware of the need to make bowls appeal to a wider age group. He also described the difference between flat green bowling, as at King George's, and crown green with a crest in the ground to be negotiated so bowling is part uphill, part downhill.
Also mentioned was June 8th's Arthur Bennett Memorial Trophy, played for by Essex clubs remembering the late proprietor of the Brentwood funeral directors. Twelve teams of eight (four men, four women) are expected at King George's contesting the trophy.
