Brentwood Handball Development Group

After an absence of more than 20 years, competitive handball returns to the county when the Brentwood Handball Development Group hosts a handball day on Sunday 4th May at the Brentwood Centre.

John Compton and David Bishop

It’s a fantastic opportunity to watch and have a go at this high-energy game.

A ‘come and try’ session will follow, where members of the public can have a go for themselves and see just how much fun the game can be.

In the 70's and 80's the Brentwood Handball Club was one of the most successful handball teams in the country. They were five times National Champions and British Cup winners, made one appearance in the European Cup Winners Cup and were four times European Cup entrants. Several players won England and GB honours including the 1976 pre-Olympic qualifying rounds. Handball was voted best sport at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and is currently played in 159 countries with 31 million participants and virtually no one in the UK has ever heard of the game!

The Brentwood Handball Club from the 1970’s and early 80’s is reuniting for a training session in preparation for a memorial game in Cannock later in the summer. There, they will remember Great Britain, England and Olympian Nick Bates who was killed in a car accident aged just 21.

John Compton, a former member of that all conquering team is now a member of the Brentwood Handball Development Group and he paid David Bishop a visit on Drive Time on the 30th April to talk about this event and the sport in general.

If you wish to contact John and his colleagues regarding this special event or have any other general handball queries, you can phone on 01268 762565 and email brentwoodhandball@yahoo.co.uk.
