SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH ESSEX FORD BILLERICAY – 26.4.08

Special constable Mike Kay was in to talk about life as a volunteer police officer.  Anyone over 18 can apply to become a special and new recruits are in demand.  While there are around 400 volunteer officers supporting Essex Police at present, the force has declared its intention to add another 600 within four years.

Mike (pictured) and all other specials are required to work 16 hours a month and undertake a further two hours training.  Authority and powers are the same as their salaried opposite numbers (called regulars).  There is no outward difference between regulars and specials in terms of uniform, badge etc.

With an office job in the health sector, Mike can work his police duties around his Monday to Friday, nine to five profession.  A police uniform is supplied and an allowance paid.

If you would like to find out more about volunteering as a special, visit www.essex.police.uk or phone 01245 452254.  The police's next recruitment evening for prospective special constables is on May 13 at 8pm at Hutton Poplars Lodge.

Mike's music choice covered one track for himself, the second police colleagues and a final one for a laugh, namely Photograph by Nickelback, Bonnie Tyler's I Need A Hero and I'm In The Mood for Dancing by The Nolans respectively.
