KEYS HALL DEBATE

John Fryer and Louis Gladwell

Keys Hall is a base for community groups such as Holdens Archers, a theatre company, boys brigade, youth band, child minding, martial arts and charities.

Owners Brentwood Council have decided Keys Hall is surplus to the borough's requirements and earmarked the old Duchess of Kent building, on the former Warley Hospital site, as a replacement.

Louis Gladwell, of Holdens Archers, was on the show and told listeners the archery group had met weekly at Keys Hall for 15 years. "Holdens Archers are indignant about the closure decision and not impressed by the alternative accommodation offer", Louis told Phoenix FM.

He called on all Keys Hall tenants to join forces to fight the move. Holdens Archers also offered station listeners a free introduction to archery lesson. Phone 01277 211281 to arrange.

Brentwood historian John Fryer joined the debate, explaining that Keys Hall could trace its history to the 1920s when it was built as a gymnasium for Warley Barracks.

He said Brentwood borough was unique in having around 400 community groups who needed accommodation such as Keys Hall for meetings and storage.
