Body Talk -5th February



Karate was the theme of tonight's show. Steve Strong has joined us before talking about the benefits of getting your children involved in this ancient art of self defence. Tonight he was telling us all about the health benefits.

Steve is three times British Forms Champion and has a wealth of experience, having practised karate from an early age.

He founded his own school, The Way of the Spiritual Warrior, which celebrated it's first birthday on Friday. The school has had a brilliant first year, and Steve is planning on an even better second year.

Steve explained to us the Trinity of Kata. Many of you karate enthusiasts will be familiar with the term kata, which is used in classes throughout the country, mostly to describe a series of movements. There is much more to it than that.

The trinity comprises of health, skill and boxing. The health aspects are really self explanatory. Through regular practise your overall fitness level increases and you reap the benefits in many ways, such as increased energy levels, confidence boosting and a general sense of wellbeing.

The next is skill. Once you have learned the movements, you are taught the skill of using them in any situation. Speedier  reflexes and better co-ordination are the results of regular practise.

Boxing is the final part. Where you can feel confident in any situation to deflect an attack. Whether this be in a competition, in class or in a real life situation.

These three aspects combined are what makes the difference betwen an ordinary exercise class to maintain fitness, and a class that teaches you how to improve many different aspects of your life.
