Soul Inspired 17th January 2008
Do you ever re-discover artists or groups or even songs that you've loved and not listened to for a while?
I'm doing that at the moment with Curtis Mayfield - for no good reason I haven't paid him much attention for a long, long while and now I'm really enjoying some of his back catalogue all over again. That's why on this show I've featured two tracks from him and will definetly feature him as part of my 'Double Play' occasional series very soon. Talking of re-discovery; also in this show were a few tracks not heard on the show before, most notably the original 12" version of Moneys Too Tight To Mention by The Valentine Brothers (John and William in case you'd forgotten?) from 1982 and of course, made famous a few years later by the Simply Red version.
I just want to say here and now that I'm not a Simply Red basher; I happen to think that Mick Hucknall is one of the best soul singers this country has ever produced and I get a little bored at those oh-so-trendy critics who think it's clever to knock him because he sings in that style, isn't black and (shock horror) ginger as well! He also has a mass appeal that crosses all age boundries as well. Are there no end to his crimes? So he's dated a lot of women in his time as well - who cares? I think the man is a major singing talent and his version of this classic was done sincerely and with love for the original source material by The Valentines as it was a track he danced to in the clubs around Manchester when he was younger. Personally I happen to think the original is the best and I'm sure Mr Hucknall wouldn't mind me saying so but I just thought I'd say here an now that my opinion on that isn't based on some tired old desire to knock a great UK music success story. I'll leave that to other more 'informed' music critics.
Anyway, rant over!
Thank you again for listening on 98FM around Brentwood and Billericay and the surrounding areas and to the hard core 'Soul Belly Children' who were listening on-line via the chat room and streaming.
