SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH OLIVER ROWE - 8.12.7
Brentwood's top cop Alan Ray made a pitstop with Phoenix FM today. In the police for 15 years, Chief Insp Ray has already served as sergeant and inspector at the town's London Road station.
Now back as head of the 60-strong team based there, Chief Insp Ray has taken on an operation faced with an average of 12 crimes every 24 hours on its patch.
The Brentwood police division covers the area between the M25 to the south round to Blackmore on one side and Billericay on the other. Its crime rate is around half that of neighbouring Harlow division.
Saturday Pitstop listeners heard Brentwood police's current priorities include daytime distraction burglaries and nighttime revellry on the High Street. Chief Insp Ray explained Brentwood is a popular target for criminals travelling out of London into a relatively prosperous area on the look out for homes and vehicles to target.
He defended police support officers (or special) clocking off at midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, just as the High Street is at its busiest. This is national policy, not a local rule, Chief Insp Ray said, and that he would not like to see specials deployed to police the toughest zones and time periods. That's for fully trained, uniformed police constables, said the Chief.
Some reassurance was offered to taxi drivers, including previous Saturday Pitstop guest Lance Carolan (www.phoenixfm.com/story/897.php), alarmed at the rise in late night weekend crime. More officers will be on duty at these times, the police Chief vowed.
His music choices, played on Saturday Pitstop, were two by Johnny Cash (One and I'm Leaving Now) sandwiching Elvis Presley's Are You Lonesome Tonight?
