Enniskillen Radio station ordered to switch off

Enniskillen's community radio 'Vibe FM' has been ordered to wind up.

The order came at a High Court hearing in Belfast on Thursday following a claim taken against the radio station by the security firm, Samdec Limited.

Having been deemed insolvent, the High Court made the order that the radio station should be wound up. The order was served on the Station, which then ceased broadcasting at the end of last week.

The news came as a shock to many of the volunteers who worked on the radio and who did not have any idea that the station was facing financial difficulties. As a community radio, none of the volunteers are paid and the radio station was only allowed to operate using whatever money could be gathered by fundraising in the community.

One volunteer with the station, who wished to remain anonymous, said that he was at a loss to explain how the radio station failed to meet their bills given the amount of fundraising that they had organised in the county over the last 18 months since the station started broadcasting in Enniskillen.

He said that he was deeply disappointed to see the radio station close, and felt it would be a loss to the entire community.

Despite Vibe FM's future in Fermanagh looking non-existent, the licence for the radio has not yet been revoked by the regulating body Ofcom.

A spokesman for Ofcom explained: "We are aware of the Belfast High Court ruling in relation to Vibe FM and we are in contact with the Official Receiver's office. Ofcom has not revoked Vibe's licence and we will make no decision until we have further information.

"We have been in discussions with the radio station for some time, and our goal has been to make sure that the station's licence conditions were being met. As the communications regulator, we have no involvement in any radio station's day-to-day commercial arrangements."

Email from Roger Thorne, Forest of Dean Radio:

Quote:
This press release issued yesterday:

"Forest of Dean Community Radio will cease broadcasting at midnight on 31st December 2009. This decision has been taken by the management group after a review of the funding and other resources available to the project.

This brings to an end almost 14 years of community broadcasting in the Forest, over half of which has been as a full-time Community Radio Station.

Radio "for the people, by the people" was first broadcast in the Forest via a series of 16 short-term projects starting in 1995 which aired for a few days in each of the Forest towns, usually to coincide with a festival or event. As the new millennium arrived the Forest project was accepted as the only rural station in Government trials set up to test the concept of radio that is community owned and controlled.

The station became the UK 's very first full-time Community Radio station when it was awarded license number CR001 after legislation was passed in 2003 creating a whole new tier of radio which is aimed at giving local people access to the media. During the project's lifetime thousands of Forest people have been involved the station by making or appearing in programmes or helping in other ways. With their involvement has come increased skills and confidence, some even going on to full-time employment in the media. As well as the benefit to people involved, the project has also built an audio archive running into thousands of hours covering not only the big events like the "Save our Services" campaign but also documenting our language and culture as well as stories of ordinary Forest lives.

Despite many months of effort the project has been unable to secure sufficient funding and resources to enable it to continue until the end of its present five year license at the end of 2010. Management have
taken this decision now in order to preserve the core of the project assets so as to provide a foundation on which community media work in the future may be built, although what form that may take is currently uncertain."

As you can imagine, very hard news to take. We tried, we REALLY tried, but in the end the hardest decision had to be taken. It's gut-renching.

I'm trying to look at the fantastic acheivements Fodradio made during its lifetime, but right now its hard. I guess we need to learn the lessons and start all over again.

As you can see, one of the first batch of CR stations to launch. A reminder that stations are closing, and many others are hanging on for dear life, all because of lack of funding.

This is why we are all set modest targets to make sure Phoenix doesn't join them!

Radio Today
27 November 2009

Less than a week after it was announced the first community radio station in
the UK is to close, another community group has said it too will close
unless extra funding is found.

Cambridge station 209radio will cease transmission by the end of the year
unless the people of the city support it, the station said.

The station has only recently announced plans to offer more to the citizens
of Cambridge in 2010, which include renaming the station to reposition
itself more strongly within the Cambridge community, but it can now only
survive if someone comes forward able to offer it a lifeline. Chairman of
209radio Clive Woodman is calling for support today or lose the station for
good.

He says: "We have reached a point now whereby we need stable regular
financial support to help with our core costs and continue to provide this
incredible and unique service to the residents and community groups of
Cambridge. We are calling for anyone who can help financially to come
forward now!"

209radio is also looking for the business community to help by advertising
on the station.

They've been hanging on for a while.

From http://www.209radio.co.uk/

Thank You but Goodbye

It is with deep sadness that we inform our listeners and supporters that 209radio will close at the end of February.

We've had nearly 7 years of learning, music, laughter and tears, broadcasting on the web, from venues and on your FM dial.

With what resources we've been able to use in an increasingly tough environment, we're confident that we've enriched the Cambridge airwaves with new programming and touched the lives of many with that content.

On the shop floor, we have helped individuals and groups grow and achieve great things.

But the time isn't right, just now, for sustainable Community Radio in Cambridge.

Please watch this space for information about the programmes that will mark our proud exit from the 105 FM slot.

209radio on 105 FM

Followed by a link entitled "New Opportunities on 209" which they really probably should remove.
