This week on Bodytalk, Jules Bottazzi was joined by Mr Iain Lennox, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Hartswood Hospital. Mr Lennox specialises in ankle replacement surgery, sports injuries, cruciate ligament reconstruction, the treatment of early arthritis and hip replacements, plus the subject matter of this evening – knee replacement surgery.

Iain revealed how popular knee replacement surgery has become (roughly 80,000 done a year); why someone might need a knee replacement; and talked through the history of knee replacement surgery.

He talked particularly about the most modern technique – “bespoke” or personalised knee replacement, available at the Hartswood, which involves using data from a MRI scan to plan size and positioning exactly.

For further information on this and other treatments available at Spire Hartswood Hospital, please visit www.spirehartswood.com.

Scott Ross and Frances Clamp talk about neolithic life in nearby Nevendon. Click on the player below to listen again.

From the Basildon Echo, 10 March 2009

The remains of eight Neolithic houses, between 4,000 and 6,000 years old, have been found between Basildon and Wickford.

Archaeologists have heralded the Stone Age findings – uncovered by a dig in near the Old Nevendon Road – as “extraordinarily rare”. Only 31 other such houses have ever been found in the UK.

Workers at the dig also found the remains of timber posts set in circles and a rare cursus monument, said to show the area was once used for pre-Christian religious rites.

A cursus monument is two parallel banks of earth about 160 feet apart, at right angles to a river.

The exciting discoveries are the latest finds to arise from the four-month excavation of the site, which is due to be turned into flood plains and wildlife habitat as part of Essex County Council’s plan to build a waste plant in Courtauld Road. The council hopes Trak, the company creating the new flood plain, will be able to start work on the site next month.

Maria Medlycott, the council’s historic environment officer, said: “The findings are extraordinarily rare and if they are indeed Neolithic houses, the find is of national importance.”

It’s an exceptional site and it’s so good for Basildon. It just shows we do have an ancient history and Basildon wasn’t just plonked here in the Fifties.”

She said the council planned to display smaller finds, such as flint tools, an axe and pottery, some dating back 9,000 years, at Southend Museum.

But some of the finds, including a reconstruction of one of the houses, or a timber circle, could be housed in an education centre to be built alongside the Courthauld Road waste site.

Archaeologists discovered the houses when they excavated post holes in the ground, between six and nine feet apart.

Gwilym Williams, senior archaeologist for the firm in charge of the excavation, said the post holes allowed the team to work out what the houses looked like and how Neolithic man lived in them.

He explained: “We can work out where the door was likely to have been, where the people slept, and where their kitchen and eating area was.

“We think the buildings may well indicate an extended family lived there or a large farm, comprising several dwellings.”

Vin Harrop, Basildon Heritage director said: “It’s beyond our wildest expectations, I never imagined there would be eight houses there.

“It’s an exceptional site and it’s so good for Basildon. It just shows we do have an ancient history and Basildon wasn’t just plonked here in the Fifties.”

Health Features of the week

PLANT IT, FEED IT, EAT IT!

Now is the time to get growing! The weather is slowly improving, the soil is nice and moist after all this rain and many of us are trying to save money so why not start growing some fruit and vegetables. Growing our own is also better for our health, kinder to the environment and a therapeutic task or hobby. For parents it’s a great activity to do with your children. Parents can use this time to teach children more about fruits, vegetables, the environment and nature. Adults and children often find that they enjoy something they have produced themselves so much more than a standard piece of fruit or veg from the shops. If you don’t have a garden then don’t despair – you can grow your own herb garden in a pot, or if you have a paved area you can use, you can grow things like tomato plants and runner beans out of fertile bags of soil! Initially you may have to spend some money on beginning to self produce your food, but in the long run you will save not only money, but the environment and your health.
EXTREME DIETS and EXERCISE vs. a HOLISTIC and BALANCED approach

Some of the ways I see the fitness industry and professionals within it sell their product, be it a so called ‘nutrition’ supplement, a ‘way’ of training, or a ‘special’ diet or detox is just so beyond the truth its laughable. Where these people get their research from is clearly not up-to-date for from a reliable source because some of the things they say are just a way to try and con people out of spending more money on things they don’t need, or in the long run won’t suit their life-style.
New training regimes are created that quite honestly, beat up the person participating in them and likely to do them more harm than good. One of the reasons I exercise and encourage others to do the same is to help prevent or lower the intensity of injury and conditions like osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Some of these extreme workouts or boot camp style training regimes are far too intense for the participants actually doing them. There is a very good reason why boot camp style training is used in the army, because they need it. The majority of society does not need it and it is not actually going to help them enhance their health in the ways they desire for their every day life. I actually want to be able to walk when I’m older with the knees and hips I have now and so I avoid running any distance as much as possible. There are so many more helpful and ways you can increase your cardiovascular strength whilst doing your bones, joints and ligaments a lot of good at the same time. Types of exercise needs to be so varied and it really is dependant on your own anatomical needs.
This sort of unhealthy fitness extends to nutrition. Most, but not all, sports drinks, supplements and processed ‘health’ bars ARE bad for your health. If mans created it, don’t trust it, and if they want you to buy it, don’t necessarily believe it. The suppliers agenda is not in your health (as yours is), but in your wallet. You could make something yourself far more nutritious, it will be far cheaper meaning that the money you save, you can spend on using quality ingredients. Have you ever seen The Apprentice? Well when they are doing a task that involves creating wealth from selling food, you will understand exactly how the food industry works, buy food for as cheap as poss., so you can make more profit. Cheap food = cheap ingredients = bad for your health. The other things that you want to be wary of are new diets and detox diets. I am all for cleaning up the diet, getting the right nutrition (again this is based on your individual needs) and drinking adequate fluids but extreme detox diets often cause more stress in the body than good. The thing is, everything we put into our body on a regular basis our body gets used to. It doesn’t mean its necessarily good for us but our body will expect it. When we remove too much of what the body expects, too soon (especially if a massive decline in daily calorific load as part of the diet) the body is likely to hit panic and release a large dose of hormones signalling internal stress like cortisol.
So next time you are about to invest in the ‘latest’ health kick, ask yourself or ask them if you can, WHERE their information is from, WHAT makes it different from something that is already out there, and WHY exactly is it good for their over-all health and wellbeing. ASK, ASK, ASK!

DALLAS WILLCOX – ‘SIMPLY WORDS’

Dallas Willcox from Simply Words joined me to speak about editing for publishing purposes and other things related to the topic. I was interested to know if Dallas thinks we have all got worse at spelling and grammar and the education surrounding it. Dallas also mentioned a local networking event happening nearer the end of may for those listeners who are interest. Listen to hear our full discussion and if you would like to ask any questions yourself you can email dallas@simplywords.co.uk or visit www.simplywords.co.uk

JANE KEANE – ‘THE DAWN CHORUS CHOIR.’

Jane Kean came in to share her experience of being a part of two local choirs and what it has brought to her life. We discussed the differences between the two choirs she is at and about the benefits of being in a choir. Jane came in particularly to tell listeners about The Diamond Jubilee Tea Dance happing on Sunday 27th May 2012 4-7pm at Mount Avenue Banqueting Suite in Shenfield. Tickets are £15 and this includes a delicious cream tea! Toe tapping musical hits, swing and popular songs will be sung and Bennetts Funerals are sponsoring the event. The money raised will go to various local charities. If you would like to go call Jane on 01277 210104. Find out more about these two local choirs for Brentwood, Billericay and surrounding areas and the rest of our discussion below:

SOPHIE BROWN – Drama with Creative Writing Undergraduate

Sophie Brown joined me in the studio once more to share her career progression, updates and plans with our listeners once more. This is inspiring for anyone looking to take things to the next level or get closer to their career goals, especially those who are presently undergraduates themselves. Sophie is at Havering College and her and her fellow students are going to be in a production at the Brentwood Theatre called ‘Road.’ It is on Tuesday 29th May and starts at 8pm. Doors will be open from 7:30pm and tickets are £5. Call the Brentwood Theatre box office on our events guide if you would like to go along. My interview will Sophie will be included in this post shortly.

This week I also covered lots of local news items, weather and Five Ways Vidal Sassoon changed people’s hair following his death.

LATEST NEWS

We’re still looking for bands who can do some of the overnight slots early on Sunday morning. If you’re up for these let us know – they are filling up fast …

MORE INFO:

Every year Phoenix FM teams up with the Creative Recording Studios to produce a series of “full band” recordings which then get heavy airplay on following weeks on the station (all times including prime time!)

This year, as last year, we are looking to do 24 sessions within a 24 hour time period – 09.00 on Saturday 19 May to 09.00 to Sunday 20 May – so all bands taking part will get a timeslot of about one hour to get in, set up, play THREE songs for us and get out again ready for the next band.

The sessions are taking place in the Stage Bar in the Brentwood Centre, Doddinghurst Road, Brentwood CM15 9NN.

We also interview every band, take video of at least one song, and then this also goes out on air/the Phoenix website.

ADDED BONUS – ACOUSTIC SESSIONS

Since we’ve moved our studios about 20 yards away from the Stage Bar, we’re also inviting bands to come down to the station after their set and do an acoustic set live on air for us, preferably three different songs, so if you fancy that please let us know and we’ll schedule that as well.

IF YOU CAN DO IT ….

… great, let us know ASAP (email to paul@phoenixfm.com is best) and also let me know (a) your preferred timeslot and (b) if you can do an acoustic session as well (if you can, it will start 30 minutes after the end of your timeslot). I will then confirm and also send more information a bit nearer the time.

Nicole Scherzinger, Serna Williams and David Schwimmer all seem to be trying out new things this week, find out what they have been getting up too….

Superstar!
Andrew Lloyd Webber is known for his successful musicals and more recently the TV shows he has judged on to find lead roles for his musicals such as I’d Do Anything, which found a lead for a West End production of Oliver!, and Any Dream Will Do, which discovered an actor to play the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

And the latest play to be looking for the lead star is Superstar, which is searching for the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. But one of the characters already casted is Mary Magdalene, who will be played by ex pussycat doll Nicole Scherzinger. Last year it was rumoured she would be in the film version on the production but now it is clear she will be starring alongside comedian Tim Minchin, who will play Judas, on the stage.

We all know how well Scherzinger can sing and dance so if you’re interested in seeing her acting too then do go along to see this.

Dry Ice
Former Friends actor, David Schwimmer launched his stage directorial debut in London this week. The play he has directed is called Dry Ice and it is a monologue written by a lady called Sabrina Mahfouz, who Schwimmer thinks very highly of as he explained saying “I’ve been a fan of her writing for a long time. She sent me the script for Dry Ice. I really don’t want to take any credit for it – she’s such a gifted performer and her instincts are so good.”
The play took place at Bush Theatre in Shepherd’s Bush front of audience of around 80 people.
And it seems as Schwimmer is feeling comfortable in England at the moment, he is of course Amercian but has said he is planning on maybe buying a propertiy in London as he has said “We don’t have a permanent place here but we’ll be looking to get a flat (apartment). We’re here quite a bit.”

Another Williams in the charts?
Serna Williams is of course known for her tennis playing skills being ranked the world’s number one female tennis player five times between 2002 and 2009, and she has also held 29 Grand Slam titles but it seems she also has another hidden talent which is has rose to the surface this week. Williams has previewed a track of herself rapping to an untitled song. The lyrics include subject such as tennis and money, and also gives her sister Venus a shout-out. But Apparently this isn’t the only song that has been recorded as she recorded a few in Florida last year, so this may not be the only realises we hear from Williams but if you want to hear a preview of this first one then just look it up on the internet there is numerous websites with it on.

No more Inbetweeners?
James Buckley who plays Jay in the popular comedy, The Inbetweeners, has spoken out this week to deny reports that he said there is plans for a fourth series, which would include a major character death. He has said “I’ve not been spoken to about it at all. I’ve had interviews in the paper just completely made up. There was an interview, where I was quoted saying we were going to do a fourth series and one of the characters was going to die, which wasn’t true.”

And confirm Buckly confirms Jay, Simon, Will and Neil will not reunite as he says “There are no plans to do any more, unfortunately. I think that will be the last you see of The Inbetweeners.”

Beyonce and Jay-Z
We always here of bands and artists wanting to make it big in Amercia but it seems like alot of American artists and celebs are moving to London, but now superstar couple Beyonce and Jay-Z are reportedly planning on becoming neighbours with Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, Simon Cowell and Sir Richard Branson in West London.

A source has explained saying “Both Jay-Z and Beyoncé are going to be spending a lot of time in London over the next few months,” ”Jay is over here for his ‘Watch The Throne’ Tour and Beyoncé will be launching her perfume in Europe over the summer.

“They wanted to have somewhere more homely now they are parents.”

Mark Reed popped in today to talk about a very exciting competition being run by Bennetts Funeral Directors, in conjunction with the Gazette and various local businesses. They’re on the search for two ladies – one in each of Billericay and Brentwood – who deserve to be treated like royalty as Queen for a Day. Mark explained that the lucky winner of each title might have fought back against the odds to achieve the unachievable; given up a lot to help someone else over a long period of time; or perhaps she’ll be someone who works tirelessly to help others within the community. Whoever is crowned will enjoy a day she’ll never forget, being picked up in a Rolls Royce for a day that will include tea and prize giving at a swanky hotel; a shopping spree; hair styling and beauty pampering; and a special VIP visit to a mystery local attraction – all rounded off with a state dinner for two. If you know a lady living in Billericay or Brentwood who deserves all this, send a letter, with their name and contact details, plus up to 300 words explaining why they are deserving of the prize, to Jane Bennett, Bennetts Funeral Directors, 120 High Street, Brentwood, CM14 4AS. The closing date is 21 May; only one nomination is allowed per household, and the judges’ decision is final. Winners have to be available between 10am and 10pm on 31 May for the Billericay prize and 1 June for the Brentwood prize, and they must be happy to take part in all aspects of the competition. The winners may be accompanied by an escort.

I also chatted this morning with Curator of Billericay’s Cater Museum, Chris Brewster, about their Official Garden Opening taking place this afternoon. These events are always well worth a visit for anyone with even a vague interest in gardening, and today’s was no exception – with two RHS experts on hand giving free advice, and the chance to have a go at flower arranging. If you’ve never visited the Museum before, it’s well worth a look around – at 74 Billericay High Street, look for the door next to the jeweller’s.

Nice little mix bag of musical items on today little show, as I had the pleasure of reliving the Basildon Synth Festival – BASII, with some of the interview I was lucky to do at last weekends gig with Space-buoy and Ba5ic- along with some of music from the other bands that played.

The event itself, was held in a Football club in Basildon, and was packed each of the two night with not just locals, but with German, French and Swedish music fans….and few more european nationals. This made BASII feel really international, and to add to that notion, a Band called Shiny Darkness was there, all the way from France.

Friday night saw Blancmange topping the bill, and Top of the billing on Saturday was a band muted as the best Depeche Mode Tribute band ever.. ‘Speak and Spell’; who I must say they were spot on and I found it hard to fault the close sound resemblance to Depeche Mode. Every band and DJ played an amazing set, and the sound & light system was truly impressive, for a venue such as a footy club….. all in all value for money and great music… Roll on BASIII I say…

Amazing to drive to the studio in sunshine. This set us on a theme for suitable songs which covered most of the first hour. On the phone Mary told us about the festival at the church in Navestock over the Jubilee weekend. Tim told us about all those carrying the Olympic flame through the borough and about a free BBQ on Shenfield Common. Let’s be honest, everyone loves a free BBQ. In the second hour we had a number of tracks around the idea of London. In the chatroom there was talk of where people had lived in London. There were requests tonight for Susan, Ian, Lee, Michael, Phyl, Derek and Alison. Thanks to all of them for taking the time to e-mail in or leave a request on the blog. Artists tonight included The Animals, The Walker Brothers, Duffy, Katy Meleua, Amy Winehouse, Buffalow Springfield, Neilson, Coldplay, The Pet Shop Boys, Miles Davis, Bob Marley, Ralph McTell and many more; a wide mix as ever. If you have the time, I look forward to your company next week.

CLICK PLAY TO LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW WITH LEANNE LOUISE, PLUS SAMPLES OF THE LIVE SESSION FROM HER DEBUT ALBUM.

I love live music in the studio, so today I was lucky enough to interview and the up and coming singer/songwriter, Leanne Louise. A truly beautiful live vocal performance in the studio, her voice is really different, unlike anything you will hear. Not only is she a talented musician she is also 6ft tall and totally gorgeous! Definitely an artist to watch and she has already created a buzz in the industry before the album is launched and not just here in Essex her home town but all over the UK.

Leanne’s debut album, 222, is released on the 24th July and the single, MAGIC (which she performed live in the studio) is available on the 25th May. Definitely going to be playing that track on Phoenix. Leanne also treated us to another track from the Album, SPOTLIGHT.

Her debut album was recorded at the legendary Britannia Row Studios with Producers, Mystic Matt and RDubz. Mystic Matt filmed Leanne during the interview at Phoenix, hope you got my good sides Matt

You can find tracks Summer’s Day, Crazy (RDubz remix) & Magic all on iTunes to download now.

Here is a link to the track ‘Magic’ (DREAM S3QU3NCE) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0_rQlAkOSQ

ALBUM LAUNCH

If you want to check Leanne out live, then the album launch is taking place on Thursday 24th May at Hooga (Formally Barhouse) In Chelmsford. Leanne has invited
local acts to support her and featured artists off the album will be performing with her too.

Norman Jeffrey “Jeff” Healey born on March 25, 1966 was a Canadian jazz and blues-rock vocalist and guitarist who attained musical and personal popularity, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Jeff Healey at the age of one year, lost his sight to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes. His eyes had to be surgically removed, and he was given artificial replacements.
Amazingly, he began playing guitar when he was three…developing his unique style of playing the instrument flat on his lap.
In his late teens Healey began hosting a jazz and blues show on a local radio station where he became known for playing from his massive collection of vintage 78 rpm gramophone records. Healey was an avid record collector and amassed a collection of well over 30,000 78 rpm records. Shortly thereafter he was introduced to two musicians, bassist Joe Rockman and drummer Tom Stephen, with whom he formed a trio, “The Jeff Healey Band”. The band started gigging around the Toronto area and played at the famed blues club Albert’s Hall where Healey was discovered by guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Collins.
In 1988, the band released the album See the Light, featuring the hit single “Angel Eyes” and the song “Hideaway”, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The album sold over one million copies in the US.
In 1990, the band won the Juno Award for Canadian Entertainer of the Year. The albums Hell to Pay and Feel This gave Healey 10 charting singles in Canada between 1990 and 1994, including a cover of The Beatles’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps which featured George Harrison and Jeff Lynne on backing vocals and acoustic guitar.
On March 2, 2008, Healey died of cancer at his home town of Toronto. He was only 41 years old.
In early 2009, Healey’s album Mess of Blues won in The 8th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Blues Album
In 2009, Healey was inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Cristie, and two children. one of which was also born with the same disability
Jeff Healey was a guitar virtuoso and arguably one of the most distinctive guitar players of our time.

Blue is the most flattering colour to wear and the color that suits all complexions. If you only own one suit make it a blue one. They work well with white, pink, and pale blue shirts and practically any tie and leather shoes. They also convey stability and reliability which makes this a politicians favorite.

When paired with berry shades, navy becomes a neutral piece that keeps things from getting too bright. For example, red cotton twill chinos and and slim fit double breasted navy blazer.

Ice blue shirts are just the ticket if you are looking pale as they are kinder on tired complexions than white.

Monday 30th April – Friday 4th May 2012

The Drive Show Highlights

Protein as part of your breakfast – Recent research has found that many children are arriving at school hungry. It is impacting their concentration and learning outcomes, and some teachers are made aware of this because children complain of a stomach ache (no doubt caused by acidity level build up in an empty stomach). I was therefore inspired to present a feature about the importance of having breakfast, whether you’re an adult or child, and also the importance to include some protein in that breakfast. I give nutritional examples (depending on the ingredients you source of course!)

The successful results of staying or learning how to be optimistic – studies show that those that at optimistic are more successful and productive when overcoming obstacles in life. For more about this see http://greatest.com

Health & fitness advice for walkers and dog owners – My final health feature was a piece based on an article I was asked to write for Boredom Busters, a local dog care, training and walking business. You can read this article in full in my fitness & nutrition blog here: http://www.mindhealthmovement.com/an-active-life-for-walkers-dog-owners/

Sue Higgins Interview – Brentwood Access group

On Tuesday 1st I was joined by Sue from Brentwood Access group which gives a voice to those of us who are disabled in some way. There are many people living with a disability that do not class themselves as disabled but if you are affected by something that disrupts your ability to do something that most ‘fit and healthy’ people are able to do, then you may have a disability. In the winter my Raynalds causes me many difficulties in doing normal daily activities and I have to start using things to assist me in tasks. Sue and I discuss equality, disabled rights and the current work the disabled access group is doing for the local community. If you would like to get involved but are limited with free time that is not a problem, some time is better than no time! Contact Sue suebh@btinternet.com

In The Flower Garden

Plant up hanging baskets, and leave them in a sheltered spot before hanging fully outside

Plant out potted alliums in groups to add interest to flower beds

Prune spring-flowering shrubs immediately after flowering, such as forsythia, ribes, chaenomeles, pyracantha and kerria

Regularly water newly planted trees, roses, shrubs and hedging

Finish planting out gladioli corms in groups or drifts in borders

Spread shredded bark mulches around established shrubs and trees to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds

Water clumps of tulips and spring bulbs with liquid feed

In the Fruit and Vegetable Garden

Tie in new shoots of blackberries and cane fruits to support wires

Sow sweetcorn in deep pots, raising strong young plants to transplant into the garden in June

Pinch off strawberry runners as soon as they develop, to stop them competing with developing fruit for nutrients

Earth up soil around emerging potato shoots, which encourages higher yields

Sow seeds of the following crops outside this week: radish, spring onions, coriander, parsley and chives

In The Greenhouse

Put up shading to reflect scorching sunlight and keep temperatures down

Open all vents on warm days, but close again in the evening

Order plug plants and seedlings by post, and pot up as soon as they arrive

Take leaf cuttings from houseplants, including African violets, begonias and Cape primrose

Hang yellow sticky traps over plants to catch whitefly and flying pests

Sow seeds of herbs, such as parsley, chives, coriander, garlic, basil, dill, fennel, mint, thyme, sage and lovage

And The Rest……

Plant tender crops outside, covering them with cloches when night temperatures fall

Dig out perennial weeds, such as couch grass and bindweed, from borders as soon as you spot them

Wash dust off the foliage of houseplants, and apply leaf shine product to leafy plants

Take cuttings from hydrangeas, fuchsias and penstemons, using the soft shoot tips

Feed houseplants weekly from now until autumn
