Not only was I all “fingers and thumbs” today, doing battle with the equipment – and losing (my fault – not the equipment!) but I think I must have transmitted some of my dodgy vibes to Frances Clamp who collapsed with a coughing fit midway through providing us with the lowdown on a stalwart of Brentwood’s economy back in the 1920′s and 1930′s – but more of that later.

In the first hour of the show we looked at a couple of items of real quirky news. First off was the amazing announcement by the authorities in Swaziland that witches have been banned from flying above an altitude of 150 metres. Anyone caught flying a broomstick above the limit will face a £35,000 fine. Earlier a Swazi MP called for a hike in taxes paid by witch doctors to help ease the country’s financial crisis. A risky move one supposes, always assuming that affected persons might consider putting a spell on their tormenters!

Meanwhile closer to home it seems that council officials in Brighton and Hove are resisting a demand to investigate the sudden appearance of a wormhole to another dimension. A concerned resident reported that the vortex had opened up on a local road in which he was walking his dog. Only concern that his affenpinscher (a toy breed of dog) was is in imminent danger of being sucked into the portal, prevented him from closer inspection. Passing the same spot on a later occasion, he reported that the anomaly had seemingly grown and was now emitting an unsettling yellow light with a large snake emerging from the wall! A spokesperson for the Brighton and Hove City Council said that officials had no plans to investigate the claim. Odd you might think given that some people might feel that there are a good many councils living in another dimension.

Anyway back to Frances Clamp whose subject today was SELO LTD, a subsidiary of Ilford Films. The company was founded in 1926 but ceased trading under the SELO name in 1946 although the name was maintained in Brentwood as the Selo Factory. Even now the name lives on as THE BRENTWOOD-SELO SUB AQUA CLUB, which was founded 50 years ago by a group of swimming enthusiasts employed by ILFORD FILMS LTD, meets right here at THE BRENTWOOD CENTRE every Friday evening at 8:30.

Listen again to what Frances had to say (without her coughing fit) right here: -

See you again next week.

Well Andrew may be motor rallying around Europe but the garden still needs attention, so I took a look at the notes Andrew had left lying around to try to keep you up to speed with what you need to be looking at in the garden this week. At the same in an effort to keep us entertained we played a selection of smoother sounds which I hope were suitable for a Sunday morning.

Anyway here are the tips Andrew had provided: -

Cut back the faded flowers of Pulmonaria and if you do not want a border full of Aquilegia cut back the flower heads to stop seeds being dispersed along the border!

Feed fast growing plants weekly

Watch out for Lily Beetle and sqaush them!

Flower Garden

Plant out dahlias into well-prepared soil that’s been enriched with manure

Cut down pulmonarias to just above soil level after flowering to encourage new foliage

Clip box hedging and topiary to keep it neat

Regularly tie tall stems of delphiniums to supports to prevent them flopping over

Scatter granular fertiliser around the base of roses, shrubs, perennials and hedges, and water in thoroughly if rain does not fall over the next week

The Fruit and Vegetable Garden

Sow seeds of dwarf beans in rows and climbing ones alongside canes

Plant out crops being raised in pots under glass, such as marrows, courgettes and tomatoes

Cover soft fruits with netting to prevent birds eating them

Sow a few seeds of salad leaves and stir-fry leaf crops every 2-3 weeks to ensure a regular supply

Sow seeds of the following crops outside this week: beetroot, lettuce, watercress, rocket, radish, spring onions, coriander, parsley, chives, carrots, Swedes, turnip, leaf beet, spinach, cabbage, peas and mangetout, endive, marrows and courgettes, turnips and Witloof chicory

Plant out leeks into their final position once they are pencil thick

Greenhouse

Take cuttings from pelargoniums and fuchsias

Repot rooted cuttings into containers a size larger, to prevent them from becoming pot-bound

Check plants regularly for signs of pests

Pinch out the tips of rooted cuttings to encourage bushy plants

The man himself returns next week so mercifully things will return to some semblance of order.

All the best,

Scott

Chris Brewster, Curator of Billericay’s Cater Museum, told us this morning about a very exciting visit to the museum by members of the Ealdfaeder Anglo Saxon re-enactment group, who were going to be demonstrating some of the many skills of the time such as weaving and leather craft. Chris spoke enthusiastically about her fascination with the Dark Ages, a period of history which she believes is often misrepresented; she also talked about early Saxon settlement in what is now Billericay town centre, and how a 7th Century ruler of much of East Anglia – King Raedwald – is believed to have kept his options open at a time of great change in religious belief.

Chris also briefly mentioned other things the Cater is involved with, including the forthcoming display of the Billericay Town Model in the Reading Rooms on 19th and 20th July.

The Museum, near Costa Coffee in the High Street, is well worth a visit; it’s open Monday to Saturday (except Bank Holidays), 2-5pm.
