Drama and sport were tonight's themes. First guest, Beverley Swann, has taught drama at Shenfield High School for 34 years. Her past students include Eastenders' Ross Kemp and a pre-Judy Richard Madeley. 14-year-old Ben Walker, star The Golden Compass and Torchwood, is one of Beverley's current pupils.
Brentwood Operatic Society's Marcia Alderson promoted the group's May

the youth boxing facility.
Brentwood-based Thrift Green Trotters running club trained 70 runners for this
month's London Marathon. Club star Jason Pettigrove came on air to celebrate

Highlights from the show on 20 March 2008
Eric and Kay interviewed four guests this evening. They were Doddinghurst web designer and marketeer David
Miles, also chair of the South West Essex branch of the Federation of Small Businesses; Brian Lawrence, Brentwood Council's head of streetcare and waste management; osteopath Keith Sparling and Mary Monk, of B&M Cycles and Toys in Brentwood High Street.
Small businesses - those with under 50 employees - employ almost 60% of the private sector workforce. Many are shops but, with 2,000 retailers closing every year, there will be no more independently-owned shops by 2015 if this rate of decline continues.
Brian Lawrence announced that Brentwood's waste management efforts are pushing the borough's recycling levels near 40%. He promoted the council's £8 garden composters - ideal for shredded paper which residents are discouraged from putting out on the street to be collected. Paper strips are blown around like confetti but, mixed with
organic matter in the composter, soon break down for mulch or peat.
Keith Sparling introduced listeners to his 'Sparling's Early Starter' recipe - dubbed a natural internal toothbrush for a deep gutoral cleanse: 1) Measure out a dessert spoonful of linseeds, 2) Put in a tumbler of cold water to soften, 3) Place in fridge overnight, 4) Consume first thing the next morning, 5) Eat/drink as normal. Feel the difference..
Mary Monk talked cycling products and bike maintenance. See also the story of the Monks' three-legged rescue dog Honey by clicking here.

Lucy Lock, community fundraising manager for NSPCC in Essex visited the show.
On an average day in Essex there are over 2,505 children that we know of who are considered to be at risk of abuse. Between the months of July 2006 and June 2007, 3,338 calls were made from Essex to the NSPCC Child Protection Helplines.
How the NSPCC supports children in Essex
The NSPCC runs a number of projects in Essex that work directly with children and young people. These include:
Essex Young Witness Project – provides support and preparation to young witnesses in Essex who are required to give evidence in criminal trials.
Essex Young Abuser Project – provides assessment and treatment services for children and young people who demonstrate sexually harmful behaviours.
Tilbury Children’s Project – offers counselling and therapeutic services to children and young people who have been abused. They also run groups for children and young people affected by their parents’ misuse of drugs or alcohol.
Southend Safe Communities Project – which, amongst other work, provides child protection and safeguarding training to organisations that have direct contact with children.
Fundraising in Essex
Eighty five per cent of the NSPCC’s funding comes from voluntary donations and fundraising.
Across Essex we have a network of fundraising volunteers who organise a huge variety of events to raise money for NSPCC. We are always looking for new volunteers, events and ideas and call 01702 480499 or email llock@nspcc.org.uk for details of how to get involved.
