Paris Fashion Week Updates

Paris logo

Thank you for joining for another TFZ update.

So it was the turn of Paris to mesmerise us with their predictions for Spring Summer 2014. From Marc Macobs showcasing his last dramatic black collection for Louis Vuitton  to  Elie Saab’s high drama lace and red carpet ready silk gowns, there was something for everyones taste.

Lots of shiny golds, bronze and silvers were also on the catwalk but worn in  more laid back way.

A message many designers signalled was don’t take fashion all too seriously its all about having fun with.

Andi Fraggs Interview

We were delighted at Phoenix FM to have the talented and fashionably glam electronic singer Andi Fraggs in the studio. Andi caught up with me to talk about his latest projects and even gave us a impromptu live performance of  ‘Celebration’, ‘Beautiful Feeling’ and also ‘Torch’ which shall be released soon on iTunes with Massimo Paramour on piano. Andi also mentioned about his facebook page which is open to everyone, called ‘Andi Fraggs Creative Collective’, and involves people posting their work for others to see in a critique-free environment and encourages other people to be creative.

90’s Cool

90's

This look could make you very happy, confused or you might just hate it. With the new wave of plaids, skillful layering and faded florals, our favourite designers have returned us to the grunge era. So, think loud hints of colour, chaos and clashing prints.

Golden Globes Special

Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen. This was by far the best dress on the red carpet. Kate looked elegant yet contemporary at the same time.

Worst dress for me was Sienna Miller in Erdem. Though Sienna does indeed look great for someone who has not long given birth, I felt this outfit would be best at a village fete and not on the red carpet, sorry, but it’s a big no.

Tips for making Menswear work for us girls!

Tailoring

Keep one element of your outfit fitted.  A belt is always great to cinch in a shirt or coat.

Jewellery

Trinket necklaces give the right dose of girly, layered over a button-up shirt collar. Cute stud earrings and stacked rings are also the perfect accessory.

Always wear heels

A pointy stiletto is great for adding a fierce and sexy element to a mannish look. If you’re going oversize like Rihanna, height is essential to avoid looking swamped.

Makeup is key

A strong lip or eye is a must. A punchy red lipstick instantly lifts loose mannish tailoring.

Focus on hair

A perfectly styled retro up-do or loose tousled hair is best for keeping this look fun and cool. Avoid overly polished styles.

Winter Style Tips

Cocktail rings:

Decadent cocktail rings: they’re the little embellishment that offer an instant update, day or night. Whether worn with a classic black tuxedo or a fitted pencil dress at work, they provide a hit of glitz to everything.

Fedora

Bring ’70s bohemia to your wardrobe with a wide-brimmed fedora. The perfect companion to a masculine coat or a knit layered with a gilet, there’s something about them that’s just a little bit rock’n’roll.

LBD

An LBD is still a fail-safe evening choice, but it’s time to experiment with gossamer layers. A flash of leg or décolletage can be incredibly elegant – just keep the rest of your look simple

It’s LFW Baby!!!

London Fashion Week highlights

Lulu Kennedy’s talent scheme ‘Fashion East’ was one of the busiest shows. Two presentations from Ryan Lo and Claire Barrow were followed by a catwalk show from Maarten van der Horst. Complete with a random appearance from boxer Chris Eubank.

Waiting for shows to start can be quite a long and boring time, so ‘celeb’ spotting can be a great game to pass away the time. Alexa Chung made her first fashion week appearance at House of Holland, alongside Kelly Osbourne, Nicola Roberts and Pixie Geldof.

Kelly Brook, Brentwoods Pixie Lott and my favorite fashion icon, Leigh Lezark were all spotted at the Moschino Cheap & Chic show, complete with bored looking boyfriends in tow.

From London to Milan. Milan Fashion Week closes 25th September after seven days of shows which saw a distinctly upbeat mood descend onto the north Italian city. Key trend spotted was floral prints.

New York, New York!

NYFW has brought many different looks that fashion designers feel we should be wearing for spring / summer 2013 – but the  consistent style that kept coming through during the past  2 weeks has been stripes and lots of them . incredibly graphic. 1960’s bondage kind of moment though very fresh.

To see a single trend coming out of spring summer shows is very unusual, as designers do not usually agree on everything.

I believe the reason for this is designers are still reacting to a tough economy and are trying to come up with a clear statement as to why you should be back in the stores buying new clothes.

Storyboard

Seems everyone in fashion has been reading the same book. It may not be brand new, but Just Kids, Patti Smith’s memoir, which won the American National Book Award in 2010, has been slowly capturing imaginations.

Patti Smith’s love affair and friendship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe is relived. Smith met Mapplethorpe in the Summer of Love, 1967, when she was a 19-year-old runaway, obsessed with dead French poets, and he was a 19-year-old artist, very into LSD. By 1989, when Mapplethorpe died of an Aids-related illness, he had become the most celebrated photographer of his age, while Smith was the high priestess of punk rock.

Just Kids has been described as the “greatest pick-up book of all time … Walk into any laundromat from Dalston to Brooklyn and you’ll find at least 13 “creatives” puzzling out how to be a bit more like Robert and Patti.

Now, designers are drawing from that source. The Yves Saint Laurent menswear designer, Stefano Pilati, has a definite New York Seventies thing going on in his autumn collection, with his monochrome palate referencing Smith, and his kinky leathers alluding to Mapplethorpe’s portraits of New York rent boys. His collection is called Sex and Money. “Every night before I rest my head/See those dollar bills go swirling ’round my bed,” as Smith once sang in Free Money, dreaming of a world without it.

The influence of Just Kids on the Topman DesignAW12 collection is still more pronounced. “We were inspired by its lyrical romanticism, her relationship with Robert and their early life together in the Chelsea Hotel,” says design director Gordon Richardson. The collection is tough and sharp, all stiff whites and thin greys, like Patti Smith on the cover of Horses. There are also silk shirts with a print based on Mapplethorpe’s famous still life of lilies.

Super Fly

Mens Varsity Jacket

The varsity jacket has been floating around for a while now but it still hasn’t reached the giddy heights of popularity. Varsity jackets  can be so versatile and stylish, you just need to think a bit more about how you wear them.

American prep

The varsity jacket is one of the quintessential and must have items for anyone looking to create an outfit based on American prep.

This jacket works well and is excellent for when you want to make a real statement.

A white shirt and a solid pair of loafers are the perfect partner.

Office Wear

By opting for a restrained and classic style in a grey or navy, you will gain maximum versatility when it comes to pairing a varsity jacket with your existing work wardrobe. Keep details minimal and stick to slimmer cut designs. If you want something that stands out, then why not look for one with a mix of textures – think leather sleeves and cotton/wool body or vice versa – but remember to maintain a contemporary and sharp image with monotone colours.

Twinsets

The new way to do PDA (that’s public display of affection) for those that don’t know…

Is to follow in the foot steps of the it couples, Jay Z & Beyonce, and Kanye West and Kim Kardarshian.

Kim Kardashian tweeted a picture of her ‘Prince and Princess’ bed covers over the weekend, with the caption ‘Missing my Prince’. (We hope you get to see Kanye soon, Kimmy.) It’s not the first time she’s tweeted a  ‘his and hers’ pic – there was the matching jewellery one, the matching drinks one and of course the matching sneakers one.

Beyonce followed suit, posting a picture on her Tumblr of nail art starring her and Jay-Z’s faces. Cute or too much?

If that’s too much, you can always be patriotic and go for  nail art with the team GB colours

Highstreet predictions – we’ll be seeing on the highstreet British-inspired collections that are edgy, sophisticated and quietly sexy. Think vibrant knitwear, subtle print trousers, tartan skirts, slouchy cape jackets.

Victoria Beckham – has brought out an eyewear collection. The short sighted star has found it difficult to find any thing she likes so decided to design her own.

Africa Fashion Week came to Spitalfields’ Market, London. Bringing two days of colourful and creative outfits modelled down the runway.

The two day fashion event celebrated, promoted the work of African inspired designers. The aim being to be the single, biggest African fashion event in the UK.

Holiday Celebrate

Whether it be for a business trip, a wedding, or even a family vacation, there will come a time when your finer clothing needs to take a trip. Take the time to pack smart and avoid wrinkled, worn-looking attire not to mention hours of steaming and ironing upon arriving at your destination.

Choose the Proper Luggage

Soft luggage affords more flexibility and contains extra compartments, allowing room for more items. Additionally, soft luggage is usually less cumbersome to transport (but make sure it’s waterproof!).

Hard luggage, however, is much sturdier and provides ample protection from traveling dangers, such as rough baggage handling and the elements. It’s usually stain-resistant and the better choice if you’re traveling with anything fragile.

Think Before You Pack

To avoid over packing, make a list of everything you’ll need. Take weather conditions, length of your trip, and planned activities into consideration. It’s good to be prepared, but even the most skilled packer can’t cram half his wardrobe into a carry-on suitcase.

1. Begin with the heavier items, such as sweaters, athletic attire, and jeans. These items are bulkier and less prone to wrinkles, thus can better withstand being placed on the bottom.

2. Invest in travel trees and cloth bags for your shoes. These items will keep your shoes intact and prevent scuffing. Arrange with the soles out around the edge of your suitcase.

Travel tip: Take advantage of soft accessories like socks and handkerchiefs to pad the rest of your items.

Next come the dress shirts. Roll them from the bottom to the top.  Place tissue paper behind the shirt before rolling it to prevent wrinkles.  Alternate the top of each shirt at either end of the suitcase.

When packing dress pants and trousers, make sure the pleats are aligned before rolling them at the knee to prevent wrinkling.

5. Jackets are last to be packed and can either be turned inside out and folded lengthwise or folded above the waist, depending on the size of your luggage.

Travel tip #2: Buy a small can of aerosol to loosen wrinkles upon unpacking. They cut down static and keep shirts looking fresh.

Travel Tip #3: Put all liquids in ziplock bags.

Audio Magazine Olympic Edition

It’s all about olympic inspired fashions this week. As we prepare to host the olympics, fashion is embracing the event with all things sporty.

It’s the one time when track suits can be worn with pride and not be a form of embarrassment. Well, possibly but you are granted an exception during July 27th to 12th August.

Considering Britain shall be under the spot light around the world, lets show our fashion flare and stay imaginative with these Olympic inspired trends:

  • Olympic Medal Jewellery
  • Gold, Bronze, Silver footwear
  • Colourful sneakers / trainers / Plimsoles
  • Union Jack print
  • Anything mesh or perforated, especially when applied unconventionally to a classic item or cut giving it a sporty update.
  • Hoods, racer backs / cutaway details on jackets or dresses, outside utility pockets. Again contrasting the details with luxe fabrics and minimal lines gives them a fresh look.

Trends Update

So a new season will soon be upon us and that means more eye catching trends.

Stay one step ahead of the fashion pack with quirky swatter dresses, bright tulip skirts and graphic print knits.

Skinny trousers / jeans for both guys and girls will be  taking a back seat for the new trend which is wide legged and billowing. Are you brave enough?

Plaid is another trend that will be hitting the high street. The Gaelic look is having a punk – chic revival.

Do like the style set and give a classic scarf a modern twist. Simply loop into a headband, tie into a turban or for extra vintage flare, knot under your chin.

Budget Tip

Now I know I stress the importance of hoarding, but if you know you’ll never wear that hideous outfit again, you may as well get something for it – be it money or material goods – rather than just thowing it away. If you’re after cash, then you can sell your unwanted items either at a car-boot sale or online. You’ll be surprised at how much others are willing to pay for something you’d actually pay them to take off your hands! One girl’s fashion disaster really is another girl’s treasure.

Its a Wide World

As any wannabe fashion follower knows, the fashion seasons work in advance – so when we have blue skies and sun (well we can dream) outside, fashion designers have already set their sights on they can create come the winter months.

So on the fashion agenda is a menswear trend which tends to split opinion, but has proved to be popular on the AW12 runways which is wide leg trousers.

Maybe the modern man is ready for a change and could embrace the wider leg trouser?

How To Wear

The looks featured in summer issues of mens magazines have demonstrated that the wide leg trouser trend is just as applicable to SS12 as it is to AW12 – so if this is a trend which interests you, there is nothing to stop you from supporting it and getting ahead of the sartorial masses.

As can be seen from the designer runway shows – wide leg trousers are versatile enough to be worn smart or casual – and can successfully compliment other on-going trends such as the sports-influence or the trend for colour and pattern.

Structured Day

Fashion is about to get serious, with more collections hitting the high street that will dictate a more structured silhouette.

The new trends are all about suiting details, the reprise of the cotton peplum, and corsets, all rendered in fabrics that flatter for July and August. A peplum shirt paired with nude flats is perfect for easy weekend dressing. Simply swap the look’s slim Audrey Hepburn trousers for a pair of shorts. And peplums will continue to peek out of waistlines well into 2013. For the office, a shrunken brocade suit radiates architectural elegance.

Perhaps the ultimate homage to sculpture for the warm season is Balenciagas resort collection, which displayed bonding material to form wavy summer fabric like jersey into fixed drapery and his their interpretation of a lazy white T-shirt was one that’s layered under a molded leather corset.

Paired with loose trousers, the look is anything but restrictive. Look out, loose oversized garments; you’ve got stiff competition.

Stedman Pearson Interview

I was the most excited girl to be interviewing Stedman of the legendary 80’s group Five Star, regarding his first solo single ‘Love U more’ which is released on the 8th July and his previous fashion background. Yes, Stedman is back performing, doing what he loves best.

As we likely all know, Five Star were the most beautiful family on our tv screens. Stedman, along with, Denise, Doris, Lorraine and Delory, were managed by their dad  Buster Pearson, and officially formed Five Star in 1983 which led to a string of hits. Their look and sound drew comparisons with the Jackson family and they soon became our answer to the Jacksons.

Festival Season

At one point, only hippies and rockers went to festivals – Then someone noticed Kate Moss in the crowd at Glastonbury, and suddenly EVERYONE wanted to get involved. These days there are more festivals in the UK than ever before and luckily for us, they are much cleaner, tidier and more glam – with one-day events, or B&B deals and luxury accommodation – so you won’t have to get mud in your sandwiches.

Girls

Hats look great, from the feathery Mohawk hood and trilby to even the bobble hat

Denim / dungarees

Shorts / little floaty skirts or dresses

Fringing

Try to keep it colourful

Hunter wellies

Guys’s

Pack one or two pairs of shorts for a whole weekend in the sun.

Obvious choices would be one pair of dark denim wash shorts and a more fitted tailored pair of chino shorts. Both of these styles are on trend and are very versatile

Favourite vests, tees, shirts or knitwear depending on weather

Do’s and Dont’s

DO have your mobile fully charged before you go. No battery + three days in a field = total communication meltdown; not fun when you can’t find your friends.

DO have an easy to remember meeting point. Arrange with your friends to meet there after half an hour if you can’t get hold of each other.

DO drink plenty of water. Serious dehydration is the ultimate party pooper.

DO carry toilet roll, wet wipes or a hand sanitiser to cope with the general unpleasantness there can be with the toilet situation.

DON’T bring valuables. If you can live without items for a couple of days, don’t bring them.

DON’T pitch your tent near the toilets. What smells ok when you rock up will most certainly reek by the time you’re ready to leave.

DON’T forget where you pitched your tent. It’s another school girl error but what looks obvious in sober sunlight is not so clear in maybe drunken darkness.

DON’T get sun burned. Wear sun protection.

Finally, have a great time!

Crown Street Fashion Show

Jeanette Cassar, owner of Mesh Clothing came into the Phoenix FM studios to talk about her involvement with the Crown Street charity fashion show in aid of Children with Cancer.  The event will take place on Thursday, 24 May 2012 starting at
7pm at De Rougement Manor
Hotel in Great Warley, Brentwood, Essex
CM13 3JP. Tickets are available for £8. An auction and raffle will
be held after the catwalk show.

Jeanette Cassar said the Children with Cancer charity had been chosen because of her friend’s five-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with leukemia in February 2010 at the age of three. Robert Blackbourn is now thankfully in remission. Crown street traders have all got behind the event to raise awareness and support the charity.

It will be a fun event with a fashion show, and plenty more entertainment. Check out all the fabulous prizes donated for the auction, including a VIP table at the Sugar Hut, autographed items from actor Ray Winstone, and a meal cooked in your home by Smiths Brasserie’ executive head chef.

All proceeds go to Children with Cancer.  Spaces are limited, so book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Tickets can be purchased from the boutiques along Crown Street or online at: http://crownstreetbrentwood.co.uk/crown-street-fashion-show/

Feeling The Blues

Blue is the most flattering  colour to wear and the color that suits  all complexions. If you only own one suit make it a blue one. They work well with white, pink, and pale blue shirts and practically any tie and leather shoes. They also convey stability and reliability which makes this a politicians favorite.

When paired with berry shades, navy becomes a neutral piece that keeps things from getting too bright. For example, red cotton twill chinos and and slim fit double breasted navy blazer.

Ice blue shirts are just the ticket if you are looking  pale as they are kinder on tired complexions than white.

Interview with Annette Carey

Annette Carey of Annette Carey Couture is a leading name in couture bridal and evening wear and Annette’s commitment to her art, combined with her skills and dedication show why she has a place next to some of the most talented of grand couturiers.

The Fashion Zone was lucky enough to interview the Danbury based designer, in the Phoenix FM studios where we discovered Annette’s early days in design, and  her advice for making it in the fashion world today for aspiring designers.

Annette Carey also discussed the two upcoming movies which feature her costumes. One is the The Knot and the other is Fast Girls. Both out this year. One of Annette’s designs also appears in the Google advert out at the moment.

Annette Carey is more famously known for recreating a replica of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress for auction last year in an unbelievable 6 hours and for also designing a dress using 2000 crystals and 1200 Bic pens (as pictured) as a celebration of Bic Cristal turning 60! Luckily for us girls, Annette is holding a pop up sale in Chelmsford at Mustard Bistro, 37 New London Road Chelmsford  CM2 0ND on the 25th -27th May. Dressing for the weekend

There is so much emphasis on what us women should wear at the weekend but what about you guys? The trick is when it comes to dressing up for a night out, acting your age in fashion can be important.

Twenties:

You are young, thin, single and ready to mingle. You can get away, more or less with anything. That doesn’t mean you should mind you. So recommended attire is a decent pair of sneakers (high tops if you are really trendy), well cut jeans, t-shirt, and a Raf Simons or APC bomber jacket. Remember you are a trend setter not a fashion follower.

Thirties:

You are slightly older, but still youthful, perhaps not single but you are still like to party and mingle. Its in the 30’s when we learn about quality and timeless style rather than disposable fashion. The look is contemporary but still classic. Think, crisp shirt, battered brogues, slim fit cotton twill trousers, and a blazer. Hip and relevant but not enslaved to fashion.

Forties:

You are as old as you feel which is likely still 18 but you should know by now that taking off your tie is not enough to separate corporate guy to party guy. Though at the same time the scruffy t-shirt and jeans combo no longer looks dignified. More tragic. The look should be relaxed elegant but still switched on. Blazer, or shawl-collar cardigan over chinos, shirt and you may even consider a tie. Smart casual although the term is over used, this is generally the look the need to channel.

Your 50’s and beyond:

You are now freed from the slavery of creating a trend, you have earned the right to dress suave and are generally happy to pay for quality. You are what soft tailoring was invented for , think shirt, blazer, tailored trousers and chocolate suede loafers. So well done, you are the man the rest of the guys all hope to grow up to be like.

Coachella ella ella ay ay ay

All the hip style-setters descended on Palm Springs for the 2012 Coachella Music Festival this weekend. Amongst the A list listening to Indie bands, hanging by the hotel pool, soaking up the desert sun where the likes of Rihanna made their fashion statements.

All styles were spotted from Boho to hip hop. Hippie dresses teamed with black lace-up boots to the denim on denim trend teamed with baseball cap and wedge style sneakers. Emma Watson and Kate Bosworth showed a wild side by wearing  tigerprints. Emma Watson chose a cute dress, while Kate Bosworth went for a tigerprint top teamed with shorts.

Shorts were by far the most popular choice., with them showing up in the form of denim cut offs to cool printed styles  teamed with great boots. Also popular was plenty of  boho fringing. The supermodels reigned when it came to festival style though. Their long lean shape and festival chic  added that extra cool factor.

Budget suggestion, is to go for Quality Not Quantity

Experts believe it is better to buy the best you can afford and wear it for years and years, until it literally falls apart, than to buy a load of really cheap clothes that won’t last a week. When on a budget, think quality, not quantity. For a little extra money, good fabrics will last a lifetime, and won’t lose their shape and colour like cheaper alternatives quickly do. Spending just a little more really will result in being more cost-effective in the long run.

JACK BEATS- DEEPER

It’s All White

This weeks fashion trends is the white jean. It has taken on almost mythical status in terms of fashion etiquette. The American old guard insist white
jeans shouldn’t be seen before Memorial Day (the last Monday of May) or after Labor Day (the first Monday in September), but high fashion labels including have been promoting the white jean trend for spring which has thankfully filtered down onto the high street.

Try a cropped style with pointy pumps and sandals or a ruched black boot. Teamed with a fitter blazer to guard against the winter chill.

Neon is hot for Spring Summer 2012 also, and it’s the perfect antidote to the sickly sweet sorbets that are all over the place. Pastel is cute but neon just seems that bit
cooler. We are talking acid greens, yellow, pinks and oranges. It takes confidence to wear neon; you won’t go unnoticed, but for all the right reasons. As worn well it can lift a dull complexion and and a energy and vibrancy to your whole look.

A chunky neon knit is a great way to tap into the tren, pair with jeans for a more casual look. Go for an oversized, voluminous sweater to mess up the proportions in
just the right way and don’t’ shy away from statement jewellery.

Budget Tip

If your budget is non-existent, don’t rule out the forgotten purchases at the back of your wardrobe. As fashion trends constantly return, keep your old clothes and dig them out when you’re bored of your newer things. You’ll be amazed at what you find, and won’t have to spend a penny to change your look.

Trans-seasonal Dressing

With the changeable weather, you may find you need to dress for all four seasons in one day as in the space of 24 hours the weather can take you on a
roller-coaster of heat waves to bitter temperature drops.

Dressing  trans-seasonal is the sensible option right now and  layering has become part of everybody’s wardrobe.

A few things to consider when planning a ready-for-anything look is to try mixing  heavy winter coats with summer dresses and wearing pieces that aren’t too precious, so you can store them away in your bag as the day goes on.

Avoid Impulse-Buying

Impulse-buying is a bad habit that often results in the regretful purchase of ill-fitting, ugly clothes we simply don’t want. If you’re a culprit of impulse buying and want to break the habit, practise ‘conscious spending’.

A tip is to try to use restraint:  if you feel the urge to splurge, try and make yourself wait 30 days. If you still want the item by then, you can have it! Within this time, you can also become a bit of a fashion stalker: see if you can find it cheaper and look for discount vouchers. Most of all, think carefully about whether you really want it or need it.

Hey Shorty!

Now the weather is warming up, guys it is now time to begin putting some serious
thought into making the official move into your spring/summer wardrobe. Love
them or hate them, nothing quite says summer than a pair of shorts. As this
is an item of clothing that can be a hit or a miss, here is a few guidelines to
go by.

Keep it simple – stick to neutrals leave bright offending colours to the seasoned
wearer.

Get the fit right – Not too tight and nothing too baggy. Length should definitely
not be too short. The finish should be just above the knee.

Bigger picture – focus on the pieces you will pair them with. They need to compliment
not clash.

Confidence – This is key to looking and feeling good!

When To Wear Shorts

As soon as the weather warms up, everyone ditches their layers and feels fine in just a t-shirt and jacket (or some variation on it). Why not just invert the look? In my eyes there’s nothing wrong with an outfit that consists of a cotton shirt, merino wool jumper/cardigan and a pair of tailored shorts. The key is, as with anything in a seasonal wardrobe, to pick the right kind of materials. Seeing as it’s only the beginning of British Summertime, why not start with some slightly beefier cottons or herringbone wools? Pair materials of similar texture with them such as Oxford cloth/flannel shirts and lightweight wools for the best effect.

Statement Rocks

Larger than life jewelry has been making a bold comeback and standing out more than ever this year. The launch of the BFC Rock vault brought a host of the hottest jewelry talent to Somerset House here in London and the catwalks have been over flowing with jewels. Anything from tribal nose rings to oversized earrings. Make your jewelry the focus of all by wearing numerous chunky bangles and multiple rings at the same time. Bling is most certainly back.

Fashion Freebies

If your budget is non-existent, don’t rule out the forgotten purchases at the back of your wardrobe. As fashion trends constantly return, keep your old clothes and dig them out when you’re bored of your newer things. You’ll be amazed at what you find, and won’t have to spend a penny to change your look.

Spring Essentials

Guys

5 items every fashionable man can’t do without this spring. This season, look forward to lighter colors, but also colour blocking. Skinny suits is still a trend that won’t go away, and shoes with no socks, but, just because it is Spring it doesn’t mean you can be slack when it comes to completing your look. There are ways to look polished without looking like you have tried too hard.

1 Blazer
2 Suede Loafers
3 Light colored suit
4 Fine knit sweater
5 Sunglasses

Plus: A good SPF worn every single day.

Ladies

Girls

According to a uk survey, 36% of emplyers thought co-ordination of colours was an important indicator of a candidates personality. Colour trends for spring summer 2012 are either bold and clashing or in a cool ice cream shade. Choose yellow, as your staple, lemon to sunflower, which looks perfect paired with navy.

If you want to give an instant update to your look, all you need to do is put your hair into a super sleep ponytail. Its turning into the seasons most fashion forward style and is no longer regarded as a solution to a bad hair day and to wear to the gym. From models to celebrities have been spotted with the style. If you want that A star it is the must have hairstyle to update your look.

Budget Tip

Trendy clothes don’t just belong in the top designer shops, or even the popular high street shops. Keeping your mind open and your eyes peeled really will allow you to unearth a multitude of hidden fashion gems.

Move out of your shopping comfort zone and venture into the unknown; be that the cheaper high-street shops you usually wouldn’t think to go in, vintage shops, charity shops, flea markets, even shops that are renowned as being unfashionable! Though you may cringe at the thought, you never know where you might dig out your greatest find that doesn’t break the bank. Happy scouting!

Kanye West PFW 2012

Kanyes’ Paris Fashion Week show was hit with plenty of negative press as he unveiled his collection. Kanye West has been quite a controversial addition to the fashion world, with critics claiming his clothes line lacked imagination. He hit back at critics by taking to twitter to defend his lack of fashion knowledge by outlining recent work experience that qualified him to be showcasing his collections with elite fashion royalty. I’m sure that reassures the Central Saint Martin’s students no end after their years of hard work.

“I moved to Rome after I left Japan and worked at Fendi for 4 months under cover … I was there to give ideas for the men’s collection,” he tweeted, adding, “I snuck to Guiseppe Zanotti factory while still under [my Louis Vuitton] contract and learned to design woman’s shoes for 2 years before my first show in Paris.”

“[I was] also offered a position at Versace which I could not take due to my contract with LV which was for 2 years,” he tweeted.

“Everything I knew about my woman’s clothing was what my Mom would wear. I guess some critics would joke that I still don’t know anything LOL,”

Paris Fashion Week

BALENCIAGA

Lots of electric blues and a definite 80’s vibe were delivered at Balenciaga’s Paris show. Chiffon dresses worn with boxy jackets and pointy leather boots with cone heels strutted down the runway.

ANDREW GN

A decadent black and navy  collection consisting of shift dresses, military coats to floor length drama with luxurious  gowns.Outfits were stunningly decorated with black fur or spider web detailing on the shoulders. Overall, a stunningly sleek and well designed PFW collection from Andrew Gn.

FELIPE OLIVEIRA BAPTISTA

Zebra prints worn with super-tight leather leggings and wedge-platform grey boots then topped off with a cap. Lots of greys, blacks and sludgy olive greens were on display.  A tough attitude collection.

DRIES VAN NOTEN

Cropped wool jackets with gold embroidery detailing and Chinese inspired prints worn with calf length skirts and block heeled boots. Colors were blues and vibrant oranges. Tweed coats also made an appearance on the runway.

BALMAIN

Inspired by the Faberge egg highlighted masterful design and detailing. Clothing glittered with yet more gold embellishment on regal greens and powdery pink velvet jackets. Satin shirts worn with boxy shouldered leather jackets and trousers were loose unlike their usual trademark skinny jean.

Mens Day at LFW

LFW closed with Men’s Day. Though this is the last time that the menswear shows in London will be confined to a single day at the end of women’s Fashion Week. Come June, the men’s presentations will span an entire 3 days,

Key looks seen were sequins on knitwear, structured and luxurious fabrics like black velvet trousers worn either skinny or loose fitted.

Standout pieces from Men’s day was the English-made suiting in wool and herringbone blends displaying impeccable tailoring.

Professor Chic Look

Here is the Fashion Zone guide to perfecting the professor chic look down to a fine art.

There’s nothing wrong with a little vintage back-catalogue for inspiration, Don’t be afraid to experiment with fabrics normally associated with Austin Powers. The key to striking that fine balance between on-trend modern and simple fancy dress is don’t go overboard.

To pull it off stick to the darker shades in suits. The blazer needs to be fitted but not tight to the point of Norman Wisdom. Trousers, are straight-legged and tailored – usually grazing the ankle to give a peep of colour clashing sock choice.

Layering cardigans and jumpers over rigid, plain shirts is the ultimate in practical preppy; primary colours are perfect for the colour-blocking trend and can also brighten up the darker shades of tailoring this season. Your usual vintage shops will stock the crème de la crème of nerdy woollen wear.

Finishing Touches

Woollen jumpers with leather elbow patches, give authenticity. If you happen to wear glasses, then switch to oval-shaped frames to truly look every inch the intellectual style genius.

Glasses worn purely for fashion purposes are a little too try hard, however, go that extra mile to top off the appearance and you make that A star.

London Fashion Week

LFW

This week saw London’s design talent take to the spotlight and flaunt their predictions. As New York’s quirkier, more vibrant fashion sibling (albeit slightly rougher around the hems), London always throws up some edgy trends.

Highlights of London fashion week

Stella McCartney blew the audience away with a mixture of illusion, magic and model acrobatics as she presented the Autumn/Winter 2012 season. Taking an
alternative approach to showcase her collection, the designer invited celebrities like Kate Moss, Rihanna and Yasmin Le Bon to view the show in a dimly lit deconstructed church in London’s Mayfair. After enjoying a six-course vegetarian meal, guests were treated to a special ‘performance’ by models planted around the room who suddenly leapt up and performed an energetic dance routine to Led Zeppelin.

The models were all wearing the designers’ autumn/winter collection and were joined by male dancers from the Royal Ballet who were disguised as waiters. Female performers and supermodels wore key pieces from the collection, which includes psychedelic prints and Chinese-inspired designs.
Christopher Kane’s collection contained lots of berry shades, consisting of pinstripe fur, and leopard print leather.  Oversized florals. His shows always offer something different and he teaches you new ways to see and wear clothes.

Burberry’s collection highlighted velvet suits, satin jackets with zip details. Country-living was a key  influence with  tweed caps, cord skirts with flippy hems, belts, bags and umbrella handles featuring gold fox faces.

Budget tip

Investing in accessories is a great way to jazz up your wardrobe without spending a fortune. They change an outfit immediately – you could wear the same pair of jeans and plain T-shirt
for a full week, but with different accesories, and no one would know. Look out for statement pieces of jeweler – such as oversized necklaces, unusual scarves, or eye-grabbing belts. Anything that’ll alter the appearance of an outfit and add that ‘wow’ factor is what you’re after.

NYFW & Predictions

New York Fashion Week
NYFW had designers busy showcasing their autumn / winter 2012
collections and predicting what we shall all be wearing by the end of this year. The key trends for women that stood out were lace,
leather and fur. With some designers like Herve Leger keeping with the body con look but introducing a more dominatrix approach to the otherwise classic look. Key colours coming through were black, brown, burgundy and creams. Keep a look out for this filtering though onto the highstreet.

Budget Tip:

Try varying the way you mix and match your clothes. This can create a new look for free.
Even the plainest items can look amazing when put together well. For example, the smallest alterations, such as the roll of a cuff, or the turn-up of a collar, can also make a big difference to your overall look.

The Fashion Zone Hotlist:

1) Classic White Shirt

2) Clutch Bag

3) Bright Coloured jeans

4) High top / high heeled sneakers

5) Psychedelic prints
