A bit of a mixed bag on today’s show: Fraggle Rock, a scary night owl, snow being an inconvenience plus songs that sound like other songs…
First, I spoke about an owl that was outside my window the other night – and proceeded to do an impression of it!
Snow (and Christmas) just a major pain-in-the-bum, innit? When you are a kid or have kids, it’s great – but for a single guy with a car and places to go, people to see, it’s just a big bundle of “meh”. Valentine’s Day and Easter Eggs feature.
I noticed that Haim’s “The Wire” sounded like an old Eagles song…
Have you heard the “oh, oh, oh” that Graham Norton makes when he introduces a guest? I think I’ve found where the idea came from…
Paolo Nutini’s “Pencil Full of Lead” sounds like Jackie Wilson’s “Reet Petite”…
Finally, in an attempt to cheer everyone up, I tried to put a smile on people’s face by playing a classic TV theme…
Ho ho ho – the festive season is now upon us so there was much ranting about Xmas shopping, being dragged about the town by your other half and I asked the question: “Which one of our West Ham Way team sabotaged the overhead lines ahead of today’s game at Man City?”
The super-moon (aka: cold moon) got a mention, as did resisting the temptation to eat ALL the chocolates from an advent calendar in one sitting. My summary of Christmas was proclaimed and will stand the test of time: Christmas is great if you’re a kid or have kids”... As a 37yr-old single bloke it is, quite frankly, crrrrap!

Today’s show was made all the better thanks to the delightful aroma of our new studio air-freshener – orange blossom/pomegranate since you ask – and not 1 but 2 rounds of TrumpTrumpTrump News… There was mention of drones buzzing above our heads plus the new Liam Neeson film The Commuter…

It was a busy show this week with not just the usual updates on local events and travel shenanigans (more buses, less trains) but we had news of Kanye West’s (invited) return to the stage, a 4-1 thrashing of West Ham plus the fact that it’s the season to be full of cold, cough and all-round “meh”.

Oh look, a guest… After 11am, the cheeky banter and fart noises were put on hold as I was joined by local teacher and author, Stuart Fryd. We spoke about encouraging children to read, the types of book to choose and steps to take when they’re less than keen…
Hear the interview by clicking the player above…
Stuart also shared his top tips towards encouraging children to read (especially the boys!) :
They have to enjoy it – don’t force them or else it becomes a chore etc
Encourage them to read what they enjoy, eg: comics, magazines, even computer games
Computer game guide books, too
Popular fiction for boys include: Star Wars novels, Batman, Spiderman etc.
Computer game books: Sonic, Mario, Halo, Pokemon, Minecraft
NO SUCH THING AS A BAD THING TO READ!
“Read to them until they go to secondary school. Short books, chapter books, non-fiction books, etc. Introduce them to harder texts this way… Never too late to start”
Jeff Kinney – Diary of a Wimpy Kid
David Walliams – children love the humour – Gangsta Granny etc.
The Beast Quest books – lots of boys love them
Anthony Browne is great for children of all ages – so much depth and pretty dark. Amazing artwork – The Tunnel, Into the Forest etc.
Neil Gaiman: Coreline, the Graveyard Book, The Wolves in the Walls, Odd and Frost Giants – (leads well into teen and adult books too!)
Phillip Pullman – Dark Materials trilogy and now a prequel – Book of Dust – children’s book but so much depth – awful film but amazing book!

There’s more Sunday Service next week from 10am and if you didn’t get enough of me today you’ll be pleased to hear that I’ll be sitting in for Keith Rogers’Drive show this Tuesday from 3pm.
The Sunday Service returned (after an extra hour in bed) for another fun-packed 2 hours of music and assorted gubbins including a bit of Sunday Shame plus a game of I-Spy…
Also – what happens when you run out of things to say near the end of the show? It seems that trying the old Baywatch trick of running in slow-motion doesn’t work quite so well on the radio…

The show now has a name – Don’t blame me if my schoolboy humour gets the better of me especially as it wasn’t me who came up with it 🙂 Blame Nigel Fitzmaurice.
On the show: Trump news, headphone troubles, an early preview of my chat with OMD, paying over the odds for your mobile phone, and is Dolly Parton covering Oasis songs? Never mind how the big rocks got up there, but what did the builders of Stonehenge eat during its construction? Also, my amazement at the 15-second delay that our online stream has!

Next week I’ll be opening the Phoenix FM Confessions Box as well as playing a game of “I-Spy”… If you can’t wait that long, I’ll be covering Drive on Friday 27th Oct from 3pm.
It’s a real crazy show where anything can go… Sadly, those are the lyrics to “Fun House” and entirely unrelated to this show.
On today’s show there was a gentle reminder to spend those old “round” £1 coins, pondering why we have over 20c of heat in the middle of October, and students who think that “hard water” is just ice. With education like that, sometimes they deserve to have those debts.
Hilary Clinton got an Honourary Doctorate. “I’m not sure if that makes her medically qualified but I don’t think I’d want her asking me to turn my head and cough…” and Charley the Cat made an appearance, too.
Feast your ears upon the best/worst of today’ offerings by clicking player above – and songs played during the show included:

There’s more madcap shenanigans next Sunday morning from 10am…
On this morning’s show, I revealed how a study had revealed when Marge Simpson should have left Homer (yes, really!)… There was talk of overheard conversations on the bus/train, eg: “Why don’t all the London UBER drivers get jobs as pilots for RyanAir?”.
The week’s best train announcement was a corker: “Any passengers requiring sausage rolls, we’ve just got some out of the oven” – All the more welcome after this recent school-based shenanigans!

I’ll be doing my best impression of Keith Rogers as I’m covering Drive on Tuesday 3-6pm… Laters!
On the show – that still has no name – there was deep discussion of topics such as “Imagine how different the world would be…if you could see farts?” and my people-watching skills observed how the more drink a group of women consume – the more Spanish they become.
I also mused about flying cars in the future – which are going to be a nightmare if your average parking situation at the supermarket is anything to go by… Plus, what’s the problem with having pineapple as a topping on pizza? Some people are just weird…
Listen again to 10 minutes of the best/worst bits from the show!
Songs played included:

Today was the first of the new Sunday show – It needs a name, though… Something that’s catchy and sounds good on a jingle. Unfortunately, Charlie’s Two-Hour Assorted Mix of Gubbins and Music Delights is just too long!
If you missed it, you missed a few good tunes like this:
MACCABEES – PELICAN MICHAEL JACKSON – DON’T STOP ‘TIL YOU GET ENOUGH RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS – GO ROBOT SMASH MOUTH – WALKING ON THE SUN KASABIAN – ILL RAY [THE KING] AEROSMITH – WALK THIS WAY KUNGS VS COOKIN’ ON 3 BURNERS – THIS GIRL MARCY PLAYGROUND – SEX AND CANDY STEVIE WONDER – I WISH CURE – CLOSE TO ME [REMIX] WHITE LIES – FAREWELL TO THE FAIRGROUND MAXIMO PARK – GET HIGH [NO I DON’T] HAPPY MONDAYS – 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE

There was talk about last night’s Strictly Come Dancing, a jolt from the past in this week’s Eastenders plus why dogs sticking their heads out of car windows may look wonderful – but isn’t quite such a good idea.
Back next Sunday from 10am with (hopefully) a name for the show!
