Brentwood & Billericay's community radio station, Phoenix FM, has a long history of promoting local music talent. They were one of the first radio stations to promote the then unsigned rock group 'INME', have held a number of 'All-Dayers' promoting Indie, Rock and Blues music and have teamed up with the Creative Recording Studios to give local acts the chance to perform their songs on Phoenix's 'Creative Sessions' CD's.

Now, it's time for Phoenix FM to promote the unsung local heroes of Jazz. Since May 2008, Lloyd Bonson has hosted the station's 'Sunday Jazz' show, promoting the wide world of jazz to listeners. The show has featured live performances, interviews and recently teamed up with the Belvedere Jazz Bar in Billericay to record and promote local acts.

Out of the continued efforts, 'An Evening of Jazz' was born. Highlighting a mixture of bands and performers from the Essex Jazz scene, the event aims to show that you don't have to travel all the way up to London to listen to great Jazz music.

Performers:

Chris Neill

Chris is a 14 year old semi-professional musician. He is the resident pianist at the Belvedere Jazz Bar, in Billericay, Essex and a permanent member of several professional bands. He has also played with the Ken Turner Big Band, the Mervyn Wright Big Band, the Les Leader Band, National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), Essex Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Young Essex Jazz, the Essex Young People's Orchestra, The Sid Bolan Big Band, the Eddy Edwards Band, and the David Charles Big Band.

The band features the harmonica playing of Johnny Maxim. Johnny has been a professional musician for over 50 years, playing probably every major venue in the country and supporting a host of household names. By the time he was twenty five he had achieved 2nd place in the World Harmonica Championships in Duisburg, playing the classical overture "The Dance of the Comedians".

Chris Neill covers piano and saxophone. A young multi-instrumentalist, Chris plays several instruments with a range of bands and orchestras, across styles ranging from classical to rock via jazz and big band.

Josh Law is our drummer. Another relatively young musician, Josh is also an experienced musician playing with several bands across a range of styles. Josh has been a finalist in the Young Drummer of the Year competition for two years in succession.

Last but by no means least, on double bass is Ásgeir Faben. Azy is another young musician who is very much in demand, and amongst other honours was overall winner of Thurrock Young Musician of the Year competition in 2006.
