Still on sabbatical, Scott W reports with a round-up of all of today’s results (March 4th ‘17) from the local sides we look out for on Phoenix Sport, from West Ham Utd all the way to Bowers & Pitsea & Brentwood Town.
West Ham Utd v Chelsea – Monday 6th March – KO 7.45pm (Premier League)
Venue: The London Stadium
Ipswich Town 1 – 1 Brentford (EFL Championship)
The Tractor Boys were held by fellow mid-table side Brentford at Portman Road. On-loan midfielder Emyr Huws gave the home side the lead, before Nico Yennaris levelled just before the break. This was Ipswich’s fourth league 1-1 draw in a row, they drop to 15th place. Brentford are now unbeaten in three league matches, residing in 14th place.
Southend Utd 1 – 1 Port Vale (EFL League One)
The Shrimpers came from behind to hold the Valiants at Roots Hall. Much-travelled midfielder Chris Eagles put the visitors ahead with just 12 minutes left. Though Anthony Wordsworth levelled for Phil Brown’s men with five minutes remaining. Southend remain 7th in the table, just four points behind the top six. Port Vale remain in the bottom four, sitting 22nd & four points from safety, having failed to win in nine league matches now.
Cambridge Utd 1 – 1 Colchester Utd (EFL League Two)
Colchester grabbed a point late-on at the Abbey Stadium. Gerry McDonagh put Cambridge ahead on 20 minutes. With time ticking away, substitute Sammie Szmodics levelled for John McGreal’s men. Cambridge drop to 12th place. Colchester remain in 9th spot, three points away from the play-off spots.
Newport County 0 – 4 Leyton Orient (EFL League Two)
The O’s recorded a very important win at Valley Parade in the battle of the bottom two sides. Steven Alzate put the visitors ahead after just eight minutes. Josh Koroma then grabbed a first-half brace to give Danny Webb’s side a commanding lead at half-time, in front of 395 travelling Orient supporters. Koroma completed his hat-trick from the spot mid-way through the second-half. Newport remain bottom, but crucially now 11 points from safety after extending their winless run to seven league matches. Orient’s woes have eased a little, though they remain 23rd and are five points from safety.
Braintree Town 1 – 2 Wrexham (National League Premier)
The Iron were defeated by a resurgent Wrexham at Cressing Road. Michael Cheek gave the hosts the lead with just moments on the clock, though just minutes later Ntumba Massanka levelled for Dean Keates’ men. On the hour, Ollie Shenton grabbed all three points for the visitors. Braintree drop to 18th spot, six points ahead of the bottom four. Wrexham, who’ve now won six of their last nine league matches, remain in 10th place, eight points off the play-off spots.
Gateshead 1 – 0 Dag & Red (National League Premier)
The Heed narrowly defeated the Daggers at the Gateshead International Stadium. Danny Johnson’s goal early in the second-half was enough to give Neil Aspin’s side their 5th league win in-a-row. They reside in 7th place, just two points away from the play-off spots.
Concord Rangers 0 – 0 Margate (National League South)
Concord were held in a inglorious stalemate by bottom side Margate at the Aspect Arena. Adam Flanagan’s men fall to 17th spot. Margate pick up their first point in ten league matches, though remain bottom, 13 points from safety.
Ebbsfleet Utd 6 – 1 East Thurrock Utd (National League South)
The Rocks endured a bruising afternoon at Stonebridge Road. It started well for John Coventry’s side as a early penalty from Reece Harris gave them the lead. Though leaders Ebbsfleet showed their mettle as goals from Anthony Cook (2) and Andy Drury meant they lead 3-1 at half-time. Drury’s second of the afternoon, coupled with late goals from Jack Powell and Darren McQueen added some gloss to a great afternoon for Daryl McMahon’s side. Ebbsfleet’s 9th win in their last ten league matches sees them go top, two points clear of Maidenhead Utd. East Thurrock remain 13th, firmly mid-table.
Hemel Hempstead Town 2 – 2 Chelmsford City (National League South)
The Clarets fought back to grab a point at Vauxhall Road. A Jordan Parkes penalty put the hosts ahead just past the hour. Moments later, Chris Dickson levelled for the visitors. Parkes grabbed his brace with eight minutes left as Hemel re-took the lead. Though in added-time, Dickson completed a brace of his own to give Rod Stringer’s men a share of the spoils. Hemel remain in 9th place, 11 points off the play-off positions. Chelmsford remain 4th.
Harlow Town 0 – 2 Billericay Town (Ryman League Premier Division)
Billericay, under the caretaker charge of owner Glenn Tamplin following Craig Edwards’ resignation earlier in the week, grabbed a important win at the Harlow Arena. Goals from Adam Cunnington and Billy Bricknell either side of the break grabbed all three points for ‘Ricay. Their play-off charge is well & truly on as they rise to 9th place, six points away from the play-off positions.
Bowers & Pitsea 5 – 0 Ware (Ryman League Division North)
Bowers thumped Ware at the Len Salmon Stadium. Goals from Martyn Stokes, Brad Warner and David Knight saw Rob Small’s men go 3-0 up within the first ten minutes. Knight completed his hat-trick with goals either side of the break to give play-off chasing Bowers & Pitsea a big win. Bowers remain in 5th spot, a point clear of Cheshunt in 6th. Ware’s 5th league defeat in-a-row leaves them in 20th spot, four points clear of the bottom three.
Tilbury 2 – 0 Brentwood Town (Ryman League Division North)
Brentwood stuttered to a disappointing defeat to mid-table Tilbury at Chadfields. Lewis Jaggs put the Dockers ahead just before the break. Late on, Aaron Waters made the points safe for Gary Henty’s men. Tilbury rise to 12th spot, after their first win in eight league matches. Brentwood remain 22nd, two points from safety.

Romford 2 – 1 Great Wakering Rovers (Ryman League Division North)
Wakering suffered more heart-break at Ship Lane. Iain O’Connell’s side took the lead thanks to Stephen Butterworth 8 minutes before the break. Though after the break, Chris Taylor levelled for Romford, four minutes into the second half. Taylor popped up again with just minutes remaining to grab all three points for Boro’. Romford remain 16th, now 14 points clear of the bottom three. Wakering by stark contrast are 12 points away from safety, remaining in 23rd spot.
