Listen Live Webcam

Friday Night Extra 3.2.17

This evening we had the usual eclectic mix, helped by the listener’s requests. There were also some musical surprises that are worth catching again if you missed them. We all think we know the song ‘Do you wanna dance?” It was great to hear the original by Bobby Freeman from 1958. Also the track by Asia, a classic 80s sound. Good to receive e-mails with listener’s memories jogged tonight. A first date, which was to see the Elephant Man, brought to mind by remembering John Hurt. Happy student days , recalled by Marillion. Childhood Saturday evenings with parents watching Juke Box Jury. Dancing at school in South Africa to Shakatak. Hiding behind the cushions whilst watching I Claudius. Visiting the house where Johnny Cash lived with June Carter.
Tonight’s playlist
Booker T & MGs – Crazy – show them
Shires – Beats to the rhythm
Joni Mitchell – Chelsea morning
Johnny Cash – A thing called love – requested by Patrick
Sting – Windmills of your mind – have we ever played a more chilled track?
Marillion – Kayleigh – for Chris listening in Harlow and saying this always reminds her of when she was training to be a teacher
Dire Straits – Sultans of swing – requested for Derek
Harry Nilsson – Everybody’s talking
The Shadows – Apache – requested by Phyl. Jonty had never heard of The Shadows.
Lisa Harman – Turning tables
Theme from I Claudius – to remember John Hurt.
Alison Krauss – Windy City – from her new album released on March 15. Her first solo album since 1998.
Pat Metheney – And I love her
WardThomas – Boomerang
Asia – Only time will tell -remembering John Wetton. A classic 80s track from an album that sold 8 million.
Turtles – Eleanor
Turtles – Happy Together.
La La Land soundtrack – Another day of sun
La La Land soundtrack – City of stars
Bobby Freeman – Do you want to dance? Remembering Bobby with this 1958 original of a much recorded song. Very interesting percussion.
John Barry – Juke Box Jury theme – identified correctly by Patrick. Jonty thought it sounded a great format for a TV show and should be brought back.
Israel Kamakawiwi – Somewhere over the rainbow – a charming version and loved by listeners.
Southbank Show theme – identified very quickly by Chris.
Shakatak – Nighbirds – loved by Rene who apologised to the neighbours and kids for turning it up and dancing.
Lady Antebellum – One great mystery – Adrian commented how much he enjoyed the music of this band.
Mike Oldfield – Omnadown
