Football: Local Sides Round-up (Through the Divisions) – December 31st 2016 (New Year’s Eve)

Scott W reports with a round-up of all of today’s results (Dec 31st ’16) & a look at the games involving the local sides we look out for on Phoenix Sport, from West Ham Utd all the way to Bowers & Pitsea & Brentwood Town.

Leicester City 1  –  0 West Ham Utd    (Premier League)

Islam Slimani’s first-half goal meant the Foxes finished 2016 on a high, having of course won the Premier League last season. West Ham sit in 13th place in the EPL table, eight points above the bottom three. Leicester pull a little further clear of the bottom three, sitting in 15th spot.

Ipswich Town 2 – 1 Bristol City  (EFL Championship – Fri R)

Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich side led twice in this Championship encounter at Portman Road. Kevin Bru put the Tractor Boys in front before half-time, on-loan Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham levelled for the Robins seven minutes after the re-start. Ex-City forward Brett Pitman denied his old club though with a late winner to grab a precious win for Town. Ipswich are in 14th spot, whilst Bristol City are in 17th place, six points clear of the bottom three.

Southend Utd  1 – 1 Charlton Athletic  (EFL League One)

Southend were held by Karl Robinson’s new side in front of more than 10,000 fans at Roots Hall. Simon Cox put the Shimpers in front midway through the first half, though Andrew Crofts’ late equaliser meant the points were shared. Phil Brown’s men are now unbeaten in ten league matches, sitting in 6th place. Charlton are 12th, six points off today’s opponents.

Stevenage 2 – 4  Colchester Utd    (EFL League Two)

The U’s triumphed in a topsy-turvy match at Broadhall Way. Colchester started well, with goals from Brennan Dickenson and a Kurtis Guthrie penalty putting them 2-0 up inside twenty minutes. Boro’ pulled it back though, with Ben Kennedy and Matt Godden netting for the home side. The U’s finished the match strongly as late goals from substitutes Chris Porter and Tarique Fosu grabbing the win for Jon McGreal’s in-form side. Stevenage are in 14th spot , whilst Colchester are unbeaten in six league matches, sitting 9th in the table.

Leyton Orient 1 – 1 Cambridge Utd  (EFL League Two)

The O’s came from behind against in-form Cambridge at Brisbane Road. Cambridge took the lead through Harrison Dunk midway through the first half. Though, substitute Ollie Palmer grabbed a late equaliser to salvage a point. Orient are in 20th position, just four points clear of the bottom two. Shaun Derry’s Cambridge are unbeaten in six league matches now, residing in 7th place.

Billericay Town  P – P Needham Market   (Ryman Premier Division – Fri R)

Much to both clubs’ frustration, this match fell foul of the weather, with heavy fog postponing this match.

Brentwood Town 0 – 1 AFC Hornchurch    (Ryman League Division North)

Brentwood Town endured a frustrating afternoon, as a Leon McKenzie penalty was enough to grab the win for the Urchins. Sam Owusu saw red as well for dissent following the penalty decision. Unfortunately for Tony Ievoli’s men, Brentwood have lost nine out of their last ten league matches now, and sit 22nd in the table. Hornchurch go back into the top five with this win, unbeaten in their last ten league matches.

Cheshunt 0  – 1 Bowers & Pitsea   (Ryman League Division North)

Bowers maintained their imperious end to 2016 with a narrow win at Theobalds Lane. An early David Knight goal was enough to complete their 9th consecutive league win. Rob Small’s men go back into 3rd place in the table. Cheshunt fall to 8th place.

Thurrock 3 – 0 Great Wakering Rovers  (Ryman League Division North)

Mark Stimson’s Thurrock swept aside struggling Wakering at Ship Lane. Goals from Jordan Clark (pen), Joe Christou and Perry Dunn sealed the Fleet’s 8th consecutive league win. Thurrock stay 2nd in the table, whilst Wakering are 23rd, five points from safety.
