Match-Report: Billericay Town 2 – 3 AFC Sudbury (Ryman Premier Division)

Billericay Town 2  – 3 AFC Sudbury (Ryman Premier Division)

Match Report by Scott W – Phoenix FM Sport

On Tuesday night, I made my first visit to Billericay Town’s New Lodge stadium as they took on AFC Sudbury in a Ryman Premier Division encounter.

The home side started the match well in the freezing conditions, and opened the scoring though midfielder Matt Johnson’s strike. Moments later, the hosts nearly doubled their advantage through striker Luke Moore but his effort was cleared off the line by the Sudbury backline.

This in turn stirred up the visitors who had multiple chances to level, winger Sam Bantick in particular being a threat with his pace & trickery. Sudbury drew level five minutes before the break through midfielder Dylan Williams’ strike, following good play by Bantick. Sudbury took advantage of a defensive lapse from the hosts’ just three minutes later, striker Luke Callander making no mistake from close range.

Half-Time: Billericay Town 1 – 2 AFC Sudbury

Billericay manager Craig Edwards rung the changes at the start of the second half, with two substitutes (defender Adelowo & Hubble in midfield) being brought on.

Sudbury made the points safe on the hour mark as captain Sam Clarke blasted his strike into top corner, although there were suspicions of off-side. Billericay did struggle to find their rhythm going forward, though for the most part they defended OK, centre-back Jerome Sobers being good in the air and sub Gabby Adelowo looked decent at right-back. Striker Billy Bricknell got a consolation late on for the hosts, having earlier had a goal chalked off for off-side. Sudbury held on though in the second half to take the three points back to Suffolk.

Full-Time: Billericay Town 2 – 3 AFC Sudbury

Billericay Town have brought in a number of new signings recently since new owner Glenn Tamplin’s arrival and to be fair, the team will need time to settle and gel, all in a competitive Ryman Premier Division campaign. AFC Sudbury rise to 15th place with this win, Billericay Town remain in 10th place, level on points with Harlow Town and Lowestoft Town.

Teams:

Billericay Town: Giddens (GK & C), Vancooten (Adelowo 46’), Stephenson, Johnson, Sobers, Wilson, Monville, Krasniqi (Hubble 46’), Bricknell, Moore (Capela 74’) & Taaffe

Subs Not Used: Bakare & Cojocarel

AFC Sudbury: Garnham (GK), Carroll, Austin (Newman 74’), Williams, Henshaw, Tann, Bantick (Wales 83’), Clarke (C), Callander, Parker & Eagle (French 56’)

Subs Not Used: Dunlop & Robinson

Booked: Clarke
