Recently, I had the opportunity to work at Phoenix Fm for a week of work experience. It was a very entertaining and enjoyable experience which enabled me to explore what the “world of radio” is like.

The opportunity to work in the studio for 7 hours a day allowed me to work with various presenters on their different radio shows. I also was in the studio for various interviews during the week which gave me an insight into how they work and the logistics of them. I would describe myself as quite shy, but being here in such an encouraging environment allowed me to “come out of my shell” and I was even able to read the Phoenix Events Announcements and become more comfortable with talking on air as the week progressed.

I came into the studio at different hours each day and spent time on the Breakfast Show with Mike Porter which gave me an understanding of how the radio shows were organised with the weather and traffic.

I also joined Michelle Ward on her show “Eat My Brunch” and had a lot of fun everyday, if it was just having a chat or having a joking about on air, Michelle created a lovely atmosphere where we could talk about music and eat lots of chocolate!

During the week, I let it slip that my Driving Theory Test was coming up and Bob Simpson arranged a small “Mock Driving Test” for me to answer on air which was very funny and amusing. Bob also let me read the Entertainment News which despite being nervous about it allowed me to feel much more confident talking on the air.

In Keith Rogers’ ‘Drive’ show, in association with Intu Lakeside, was extremely enjoyable because I was allowed to pick the year for the Retro chart and pick the songs to play from this chart. I was also able to read the top 5 songs for the chosen Retro chart year. I loved doing this because it enabled me to explore a wider range of music, (some older music that I had no idea about), and I could then go home and look up the artists that I didn’t know and I’d heard being talked about during the day.

I would really recommend looking for work experience at Phoenix Fm or any other radio station because it gives you a new-found confidence that I would other wise not have gained. It was such a good week and I have now decided that I would love a career in based in media especially radio!
