Friday Nigh Extra 8.7.16 with guest Cllr Noelle Hones, Mayor of Brentwood

Cllr Noelle Hones joined me in the studio tonight for her first radio interview. She talked about the kinds of events she attends as mayor. This averages as more than one a day. Recent events included visiting Brentwood School and being involved in the commemoration of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme in Ingatestone. She had also had a Civic service at Ingatestone church and attended the Civic services of other mayors. All this engagement in community events meant that she could not not undertake some of the normal Brentwood Council functions on committees. However, she still did all her local work in representing Ingatestone, Fryerning and Mountnessing. She spoke enthusiastically about enjoying being a councillor. Noelle is supporting three charities during her year as Mayor.

The Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary in Buttsbury, Ingatestone. www.info@remussanctuary.org This charity is involved with combating horse cruelty and providing a sanctuary for abused horses.

Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal was founded in 2009. The charity aims to improve the life of children in Essex living at home with cancer or other life threatening diseases. https://gtca-appeal.org

The Christy Hall in Ingatestone is a community hall used by lots of organisations, including Scouts and Brownies. You can find them on facebook icsout.dnsalias.org/ch/ Noelle has been invovled with the town-twinning scheme before she became mayor. She spoke about how she feels this is a very important part of the work of the council, to try and develop positive links with towns in other parts of Europe. More information can be found on the Brentwood Council website.

Jonty brought us a number of unusual stories tonight. Residents of Hebden Royd whose Christmas celebrations were cancelled because of flooding have held their celebrations six months later. The Vicar in Kidlington, along with other local residents, is bemused by the face that bus-loads of Chinese and Japanese tourists have been turning up in the village. It is thought there might be a vague link with the Harry Potter franchise and Inspector Morse novels. Cluedo have killed off the character of Mrs. White, the housekeeper, and replaced her with Dr. Orchid, who has a PHd in plant toxicology and was home-schooled by Mrs. White. They have also re-vamped all the existing characters, making them all look younger and more 21st century. This includes the Revd. Green. Finally we heard about Thomas Thwaites. He decided he was so stressed by his daily life that he would live for a period as a goat. This included being fitted with prosthetic limbs and walking in a field with the animals. The Wellcome Trust gave him a small grant to undertake this project and he has written a book, ‘Goatman: How I took a holiday from being human’. He spent three days on the goat farm and would recommend the experience, calling it “a special kind of time”.
