Our first FITNESS IN MIND ALL DAYER took place at the Brentwood Centre on Saturday 25 June.

The idea behind the day was help raise awareness of Fitness In Mind, an aware-winning initiative based at the Brentwood Centre designed to promote, encourage and provide physical activity as an aid to mental wellbeing.

Eight local bands supported our first event. Our first band of the day were POISONED YOUTH from Brentwood, only having a handful of gigs behind them and playing for the first time for Phoenix FM!

Zack, Iggy and Brendan played a mixed set of covers along with one or two of their own songs and for a trio they made a great noise! We’re sure we’ll be hearing more of them in the future.

The members of our second band may only be 13 years old but you could almost call them seasoned performers already! NO OFF SWITCH performed in the Phoenix FM tent at the Strawberry Fair in Brentwood over a year ago and the Hermit Rock School band have been playing lots of shows in the lol area since then.

We were treated to another mix of covers and original material and I’m impressed not just by how tight the band have become in the last year but how the drummer manages to sing lead vocals AND play keyboards too!

Our next band travelled further than anyone else with CASTAWAY coming from up north – well, Colchester to be precise!

The crowd enjoyed a great indie/rock set with a couple of punk covers thrown in – I particularly liked their version of the Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen In Love and I tried not to dwell on the fact that the single probably came out at least a decade before the band were all born!

A band that hasn’t been together too long are Basildon/Canvey’s SKUFF but you wouldn’t have guessed it from listening to them.

Their sound veers between indie/alternative and harder rock and Alex, Curtis, Michael and George put on a brilliant show with powerful vocals and great musicianship.

We then enjoyed a wonderfully noisy and rocking set from Chelmsford pop-punkers EVERGREEN.

They managed to belt out half a dozen numbers despite having a stand-in bass player, with the band’s regular bass player moving over to lead guitar for the set.

Our next band were a little bit more retro – THE NOISE MERCHANTS from Rayleigh.

Ethan, Jonathan and the two Callums played a fantastic set and weren’t jaded at all even though they were here all day! The band gave us an excellent demonstration of classic and modern rockabilly at its finest, including some fantastic rock’n’roll versions of Tainted Love and You Spin Me Round (Like A Record). And it was Jonathan’s birthday too!

Our seventh band of the day were RESERVOIR BLUES.

The band, which features former Micrafish singer Ryan along with Jack, Rob, Kieran and Ben, gave us a tight and polished set of blues rock.

And last but not least … our headliners, Southend’s INTO HORIZON!

Rick, Elliott, Glen and Luke joined the line-up at short notice but still performed a fantastic set which was definitely a very worthy way to end the day’s proceedings.

A big thank you to all of the bands for taking part in a very worthwhile event, to the guys from Fitness In Mind and the Brentwood Centre who helped out on the day, and to everyone who turned up and supported it!
