Ryman League Premier: Brentwood Town 0 Bognor Regis Town 1

Brentwood Town were undone in blustery conditions, as the gap shortens at the foot of the table to two points after a 1-0 defeat at home to Bognor Regis Town.

A late second half goal was the difference between the two sides, as Ollie Pearce converted directly from a set piece.

Before kick-off Brentwood announced that caretaker manager George Borg will take charge of ‘The Blues’ on a permanent basis.

Borg made three changes to his side that lost away in the FA Trophy at the weekend. Young Dwade James started in place of Craig Reid, Connor Hogan got his spot ahead of the injured Nicky Symons and Andrew Freeman was preferred to Ollie Bell.

The windy conditions caused all sorts of problems for the visitors, as Brentwood maintained large amounts of possession with the conditions favouring them but could not convert the majority of the pressure into clear cut chances.

Brentwood used the conditions to their advantage and put the ball in the net just after the half hour mark. Mitch Hahn’s low cross squeezed through the defence to the far post, for the unmarked Liam Hope but was ruled out for offside by the linesmen.

‘The Blues’ had to make an early substitute, as Sam Lechmere went down after a 50/50 tackle and had to be stretchered off – to be replaced by Ritchie Jones.

Tom Richardson nearly grabbed the opening goal for Brentwood, after a high ball was not clear by Bognor and he found time to shoot on the turn but his shot went just over the bar – with the keeper at full stretch.

Brentwood continued their dominance, which almost caught the Bognor keeper out as Hahn’s over hit cross nearly found its way in at the far post.

In the second half, Bognor were now in the ascendancy and almost scored 64 minutes in after good play down the left flank was cut inside for James Crane to strike goalwards – inside the box but for a last ditch block by Captain Martyn Stokes.

The away side nearly scored from the corner, as Pearces’ caused Brentwood problems after Hope’s clearance attempt blew goalwards and Guest had to produce a save at full stretch – to deny the visitors as the rebound was fired over.

Brentwood were under constant pressure at the back and were pinned in their own half from the persistent wind and Pearce nearly scored directly from the corner, as it hit the top of the crossbar.

The visitors tested Guest once more from range, as Jason Priors’ shot got a slight deflection but Guest was equal to it with a strong hand to tip it over.

Bognor broke the deadlock with seven minutes remaining from the repeat threat at corners, as Pearce’s set piece went straight in at the far post, catching Guest off guard.

In the away sides’ attempt to seal the win substitute Alfie Rutherford’s long range shot skimmed the crossbar, to deny Bognor a second and saw out the final minutes to take all three points.
