As the rugby alternative tonight, Nikki and I in my preview on her programme decided that the weather made you feel tired and just want to curl up. The title of the show was born. The music was an eclectic mix as ever. Thanks to Paul for informing us via twitter of the 50 songs that scientist say make you feel good. So the number one had to be squeezed in tonight. Chris via e-mail was suggesting duos and also telling us about a family connection to the band Lightening Seeds. Rene arrived late in the chatroom and watched the rugby whilst listening to PhoenixFM. Now that is dedication! We looked at the Ig Nobel Prizes awarded yesterday at Harvard. These are a parody of the Nobel Prizes and are given for ten unusual or trivial achievements in scientific research. The stated aim is to “honour achievements that first make people laugh and then make them think”. Michael Smith, of Cornell University, subjected himself to several bee stings a day all over his body to match out which section of the body was the most sensitive. The worst place was the nostril. Entomologist Dr. Justn Schmidt had created a Sting Pain Index and had allowed himself to be stung over 1,000 times by over 150 species. The highest pain was inflicted by a bullet ant. There were also a prize for Professor Gregory Weiss for inventing a chemical recipe to unboil an egg. Altogether there were ten awards. We also heard about Aretha Franklin singing for the Pope on 26th of September at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia as part of his USA tour that begins on September 22nd.
