80’s sports news!

facebook.com/GR80sRadioShow @Gr80sRadioShow

This week I seemed to have lots of SPORTS 80’s news – it must be that cheeky Chris Hood & Ronnie O’Sullivan influencing me with their Thursday Midweek Matchzone just before my show!

Anyway, news this week in the 80’s:
1982. England draw 0-0 with hosts Spain and are eliminated from the World Cup in the second group stage. Ron Greenwood retires as England manager after five years and is succeeded by Ipswich Town manager Bobby Robson.

1985 – Boris Becker becomes the youngest player ever to win Wimbledon at age 17. He is a six-time major singles champion, he also won 13 Masters Series titles, five elite indoor, and an Olympic gold medal in doubles. He is currently coaching Novak Djokovic.

1986: 1 July – Gary Lineker becomes the most expensive British footballer ever in a £2.75 million move from Everton to FC Barcelona.
2 July – 24 hours after Gary Lineker’s transfer, Ian Rush sets a new transfer record for a British footballer when he agrees a £3.2 million move from Liverpool to Juventus of Italy
