Friday Night Extra 3.7.15 with guests Nathalie, Torquil & Louise in the first hour and David Pickthall MBE in the second.

On a lovely sunny evening, we had a packed show tonight. In the first hour my guest were Nathalie & Torquil Macleod and Louise Knight. Having visited the OSU Children’s Home in Ghana, Nathalie felt passionately that she had to try and do something to help the children. She saw a school bus that they were using that was clearly in very bad condition. Talking about it with her friend Louise, they decided the answer was to organise a charity ball to raise money to buy a bus to help make sure the children could get to school. The home has over two hundred children covering all the years of schooling. Torqil told us about the importance given to education in Ghana and that it is seen as a way out of poverty. By funding the bus, contributors will be investing in the children’s future. There are full details on the Phoenix98FM events guide, with links through to the facebookpage. Nathalie can be contacted on 07952702959, Louise on 07885110721. We also said “Happy Birthday” to Nathalie’s father, listening in Ghana.

In the second hour I was joined by David Pickhard MBE. He talked about his surprise and delight at being awarded the MBE for services to education and charity. After being a pupil at Brentwood School, David returned as a teacher, staying for 32 years and becoming Head of Music.
During that time he formed the Brentwood Big Band. They went on many tours, including one memorable trip to Alabama. They produced many CDs which were sold for charity. He also talked about people he had known at school who had become famous. David will be back on air, choosing music in the next All that Jazz on Monday at 6.
