Whilton Mill, Round 6

Last weekend saw Round 6 and the half way point of the Whilton Mill Kart Club Championship. Essex racer Lochlan Bearman went into the event as Championship Leader and of the back of a win from his last outing.

Practise day was hot and sunny and the 13 year old was struggling all day with power issues. “I had nothing out of the corners or down the straights, the kart was just dead” complained the youngster. Additionally the kart was grounding under heavy braking and hitting floor causing a loss of steering. Consequently Bearman was 0.5 seconds off the pace.

Having tried many changes to resolve the issues the Bearman team were facing a difficult Sunday.

Sunday dawned wet the Phoenix98FM driver started Heat 1 from Pole. It was immediately obvious that his kart could not change direction in the same manner as his competitors and he was still struggling for power. He did well to cling on to a 4th paced finish.

He started Heat 2 from the back and made a tremendous starts to get up to 5th. He was hanging on to the karts in front but did not look like he could pass but managed to find a way through to 4th and defend that through to the finish.

For Heat 3 the sun was out and the track had dried. Gary Cooper of CooperMotorsport made a number of changes to the set-up of Bearman’s machine. Bearman was starting 6th and mad another great getaway to lead the field as they completed Lap 1. Whilst he was definitely quicker he was being caught by the karts behind. He crossed the line ahead of 4 karts for the start of Lap 3 but could not defend and finished Lap 4 in 4th place. Now there was a ferocious battle between the leading karts, Bearman was 3rd by Lap 6 and back to 4th on Lap 8 where he stayed until the finish but securing fastest lap on route.

These results put him in 4th place for the Final. Completing Lap 1 in 3rd place Bearman seemed to be enjoying better handling and more power, and he passed the 94 kart to be in second as they finished Lap 2. Bearman held this position through to the completion of Lap 8 when he was passed by the 52 and demoted to 3rd. Bearman then followed 52 and let his tyres cool for a couple of laps before pushing hard again and retaking second place on Lap 13. Despite trying hard and setting his fastest lap he could not catch the No 19 kart who had built a good enough lead at the start not to be under threat and came home 2nd.

“I never thought we’d be on the podium with all the issues we’ve had this weekend. But CooperMotorsport have done a great job to work around the problems and give me a kart I can race. It was going to be about damage limitation today but in the end it’s a good result” said Bearman.

Bearman is out again in 2 weeks time for Round 8 of the Hunts Kart Racing Championship at the Kimbolton circuit.
