Commando, the greatest ‘one-liners’

Let’s be clear from the beginning. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the greatest action star of all time, blessed with the greatest ‘one-liners’ in film history. But no film is more prolific than 1985s muscle fuelled destruction fest; Commando. Betrayed by his former friend, Schwarzenegger is blackmailed into an assassination mission. But Arnold has other ideas, and will stop at nothing to get his beloved daughter Jenny back. (That is literally all you need to know about the plot!)

Here we look at the top 5 ‘one-liners’ from THE BEST action film ever made.

In this Scene, John Matrix (Schwarzenegger) is accompanied by a guard (Henriques) on a plane to drop him to his mission rendezvous. Matrix has no intention of assassinating anyone other than those who took his daughter, and he quickly removes Henriques from the equation. He places a blanket over him  in his chair and pulls his hat down over his face;

John Matrix: “Excuse me, how long is the flight?”

Flight Attendant: “About eleven hours, sir.”

John Matrix: “Thank you. And please, don’t wake my friend… He’s dead tired.

Matrix has confronted Cooke (Bill Duke) in a sleazy motel and they proceed to fight each other. Cooke may be a Green Beret but he will not make it out of this one!;

John Matrix: “I eat Green Berets for breakfast… And right now, I’m very hungry!

My number 3 choice is a controversial one as it top the ‘one-liners’ in many people’s opinion’s. We fast forward to the end of the film. Matrix has laid waste to his surroundings and has just completed the final showdown with his arch nemesis Bennett. A pipe is thrown by Matrix, impaling Bennett and proceeding to spew steam from a pierced pipe behind. Queue one of the most famous Commando ‘one-liners’;

John Matrix: “Let off some steam, Bennett.

Number 2 for me isn’t one of the most famous ones, but it sets the whole tone for the film to come and we realise Matrix isn’t going to take this laying down. He discovers henchman Diaz sitting in his daughters room, with no sign of Jenny. Diaz torturingly holds a pink heart saying “I love you Daddy.” Matrix is not happy and at the end of the ‘one-liner’ Diaz is no more!;

Diaz: “Mellow out man. We can’t talk business with you waving guns in people’s faces. Your daughter is safe, Colonel. Now whether she stays that way is up to you. My people, they got some business with you. And if you want your kid back, then you gotta co-operate, right?”

John Matrix: “…Wrong!

Here we go, the top spot…and perhaps the most quoted Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘one-liner’ ever created. After a high speed car chase, Matrix has caught up with Sully and proceeds to hold him upside down over a cliff by his leg (telling Sully “this is my weak arm.”) This line is genius!;

John Matrix: “Remember, Sully, when I promised to kill you last?”

Sully: “That’s right, Matrix! You did!”

John Matrix: “…I lied.

As a bonus ‘one-liner’ and to find out what happened to Sully;…

Cindy: “What happened to Sully?”

John Matrix: “…I let him go.

So there we have it friends. My top 5 Commando ‘one-liners.” But as any fan knows, Commando is PACKED with these quotes and some very excellent ones didn’t make my top 5. Don’t agree with my choices? I could be wrong! Then let me know via twitter @CW_Stagg and tell me what your choices would have been.

See you soon my friends
