NEWS THIS WEEK
1981 – The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issues its “Resolution on Certain Questions in the History of Our Party Since the Founding of the People’s Republic of China”, laying the blame for the Cultural Revolution on Mao Zedong.

1982 – “The Jakarta Incident”: British Airways Flight 9 flies into a cloud of volcanic ash thrown up by the eruption of Mount GaloonGong (Galunggung), resulting in the failure of all four engines.
The reason for the failure was not immediately apparent to the crew or air traffic control. The aircraft was able to glide far enough to exit the ash cloud, and all engines were restarted (although one failed again soon after), allowing the aircraft to land safely at the Airport in Jakarta
The crew received various awards, including the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air and medals from the British Air Line Pilots Association.

1986. Millionaire Richard Branson smashed the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic with his 72-ft powerboat, the Virgin Atlantic Challenger.
