Friday Night Extra 19 .6.15 with Brentwood Street Pastor Jimmy Mills

It was great to be joined in the studio tonight by Jimmy Mills. Normally on a Friday evening from 10 p.m. – 4 a.m. (yes really!) you might find him in Brentwood High Street as one of the team of Street Pastors. Jimmy told us that this group of people, drawn from a wide range of churches, are to be found in and around the High Street on Friday and Saturday nights helping people. He told us how they offer to help people who are distressed. They also seek to calm potentially volatile situations. Jimmy said how most of the time their efforts are clearly appreciated. The whole area where they operate is covered by CCTV, so the Police are never too far away if they are needed. It is very unusual for them to need to be called. He told us about the training that is needed to undertake this role, including learning about Youth Culture and using role play to understand situations. Jimmy spoke with enthusiasm and clearly loves this important voluntary work. He also spoke about the fact that as they are clearly identified as Street Pastors, this does sometimes open channels, through questions asked, to talk about why they choose to spend their time this way and faith in God. He said that if anyone was interested and wanted to know more about how to be involved or support the Brentwood Street Pastors, they should contact Peter Jordan at Sawyers Hall Church www.sawyershallchurch.org He also said there are Street Pastors around the country and around the world.
