Hot Stuff!

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the press night of The Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch’s latest production Hot Stuff! It really is ‘a disco night you’ll never want to end!’ Hot Stuff tells the story of Joe Soap, a wannabe rock star who does a deal with the devil to make all his wishes come true. But Joe soon finds that what he really wants he had all along, and now he may have lost it forever.

I had an absolute blast with this production. The 70’s are not my era so I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleased to find song after song I knew very well. The standard of the music was incredible, it’s a fantastic show that chronicles a decade with its outstanding music (and a little 80’s thrown in for good measure.) There were 3 songs that I thought were particularly special; A fantastic Kate Bush impersonation of Wuthering Heights, a hilarious Tina Turner rendition complete with ‘Tina Turner moves’ and an absolutely stunning acoustic performance of Space Oddity by Cameron Jones.

The entire cast are very good, including the supporting ensemble and musicians, however for me there are 3 stand out performers who are sensational. Firstly Sarah Mahony as Joe’s long suffering girlfriend Julie. Sarah is fantastic, her voice is incredible. Her vocal skill reminded me very much of Kerry Ellis or Idena Menzel and she could be very at home singing ‘Defying Gravity’ in Wicked on the West End stage. Cameron Jones plays the narrator of the show and he is brilliant. A highly skilled actor, musician and singer, Cameron was one of my highlights of the show. Last (but certainly not least) Lady Felicia as Lucy Fur. The main protagonist of the show, Lady Felicia delivers a wickedly outrageous humour that had me in stitches throughout.

This is a brilliant show and a really fun evening. Great music and lots of laughs, a highly recommended evening out. Catch while you can until the 13th June.

Tickets cost £12.50 – £26.50. Call the Box Office on 01708 443333 or book online at queens-theatre.co.uk.
