With the announcement that Paloma Faith has been cast as Tinkerbell in a new TV drama called Peter and Wendy, on the show this week we looked back on other singers who have had a go at acting.
Peter and Wendy is based on JM Barrie’s Peter Pan and will be two-hour drama is set at Great Ormond Street hospital, in the modern day. It focus’ on a 12 year old girl called Lucy just before she is goes in for an operation. The day before, Lucy reads JM Barrie’s novel of Peter Pan to some of the other sick children, and she goes to sleep with thoughts of Neverland in her head. Lucy dreams this version of Peter Pan into existence and the audience see’s scenes of this mixed in with contemporary scenes.
Paloma Faith is known for her chart music but will now test her acting skills by playing the jealous fairy. We will have to wait and see how successful she is, but here are some other singers who have become successful in the acting world:
Will Smith
Will Smith of course is probably one of the most famous of actors. How can we forget that he started off his visual career on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air in the 90’s and his filmography catapulted from there. Some of his most famous films are I Am Legend, Hancock, Men in Black 1, 2 and 3 and his big success’ Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness as he was nominated for Golden Globe and Oscars for both films.
And now his kids are following in his footsteps with Jayden being in Karate Kid, After Earth and starring alongside his dad in the Pursuit of Happyness, with his sister, Willow, also being in I Am Legend.
Justin Timberlake
Being able to portray roles in different genres show skill in acting and Justin Timberlake has that. Playing darker characters in Alpha Dog and Southland Tales, he can also do comedies such as in his more recent films Bad Teacher and Friends With Benefits, although he is pretty good in action too as seen as 2011’s In Time. And he must have talent in his voice too as he voiced Artie in Sherk the third. Well we know he has talent in his voice when it comes to singing!
Britney Spears
Britney may have more in common with Paloma Faith has she has starred in more TV programmes than films as she has had stints in How I Met Your Mother and Will and Grace. But she has also starred as a main character in 2002’s comedy called Cross Roads.
It had mixed reviews, with most audience members giving negative feedback unfortunately.
J-Lo
As one of the highest-paid Latina actress in film history, J-Lo is doing pretty well for herself. Starting off in a few different TV series and currently filming a new show called Shade of Blue, J-Lo has a far few film credits under her belt too.
Most known ones include Monster In Law starring alongside Jane Fonda, The Wedding Planner and What to Expect When Your Expecting.
Christina Aguilera
Christina has probably the shortest list of films on this page, but she still fits into the theme because as well as having an amazing effortless voice she has had a go at acting. She has been in a few episodes of TV series Nashville, had a cameo appearance in Get Him To The Greek and will be appearing as a judge in Pitch Perfect 2. But her biggest film role is in 2010’s Burlesque where she co-stars along Cher, another singer actress, as main character Ali.
Snoop Dogg
Also appearing in Pitch Perfect 2 is Snoop Dogg who also has turned to acting over the years. It might not be very well known, as I didn’t know but Snoop has actually been in over 30 films! Some have just been appearances of himself, so no acting needed there but many of the others he has taken on other characters, the most famous possibly being Starsky & Hutch in 2004 where he played Huggy Bear.
He does like characters with similar names to his own though as back in the 90’s he played a character called C-Dawg in Hot Boyz and in another film called Caught Up he was Kool Kitty Kat.
Beyonce
Beyonce’s most successful movie performance has to be for playing a 60’s soul singer who apparently was based upon Motown star Diana Ross, in 2006 film Dream Girls. She got nominations for both Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for that role.
For her film debut she appeared in one of the very famous Austin Powers films, in Goldmember, playing Foxxy Cleopatra. But before that, like Paloma, she was on the TV screen in TV movie Carmen Hip Hopera as the main character Carmen.
LL Cool J
LL Cool J shows his versatility by being able to play a number of roles in different genres from comedy in Toys, which starred the late Robin Williams, to horror in 90’s film Halloween: H2O 20 Years Later to action in Deep Blue Sea. But like Paloma, LL Cool J likes the small screen too, first appearing in TV series NCIS in 2009, as character Sam Hanna, he is still there now!
Mariah Carey
Mariah has been in lots of films, starting out in the 90’s first starring in The Bachelor. Her most recent film has been in 2013’s The Butler with films in-between that time including You Don’t Mess with the Zohan and a praised performance in 2009’s Precious where she got a nomination for the US awards Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture.
Aaliyah
R&B singer Aaliyah Haughton sadly died at the age of 22 in a plane crash, however in her short life she did have some big achievements. Not only in music did she have a UK number 1 track and 2 top ten’s but she also starred in 2 films. In 2000 she was Trish O’Day in the martial arts film Romeo Must Die and then in 2001 she played the Queen in vampire film Queen of the Damned.
She did have plans to be in The Matrix Reloaded, but unfortunately died before she had the chance to start filming.
Eminem
Eminem stars as the main character in 8 Mile, called Jimmy Smith Jr aka B- Rabbit, who is a troubled rapper. It is a semi-autobiographical film, as there are similarities and a loose connections between the plot and Eminem’s own life. The film itself got lots of positive comments and so did Eminem’s acting.
