A cheeky THREE hours of 80’s!

facebook.com/GR80sRadioShow @Gr80sRadioShow

My fellow presenter Chris was poorly, so I jumped in and nicked his hour this week! So that meant THREE hours of GREAT 80’s tunes!

I started the show with a tribute to Errol Brown who sadly passed away. The singer and songwriter was best known as the frontman of the soul band Hot Chocolate. In 1981, he performed at the wedding reception following the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, at Buckingham Palace. In 2003, Brown was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to popular music. In 2004 he received an Ivor Novello Award for outstanding contributions to British music.

NEWS THIS WEEK in the 80’s

1984: Moscow pulls out of US Olympics Twelve weeks before the opening ceremony of the Los Angeles Olympic Games, the USSR announced it was boycotting them. The announcement, which was made on Russian TV, blamed the commercialisation of the games and a lack of security measures, which amounted to a violation of the Olympic charter. With the exception of Romania, the entire Eastern bloc and Cuba joined the boycott – 14 countries in all.

1985. Fans killed in Bradford stadium fire. The antiquated stand at Valley Parade claimed the lives of 56 supporters and about 265 were injured. It was the worst fire disaster in the history of British football.
An inquiry chaired by Sir Oliver Popplewell published its final report in 1986. Its recommendations resulted in new legislation governing safety at sports grounds across the UK.

1986 – Canadian Patrick Morrow becomes the first person to climb each of the Seven Summits which are the highest mountains of each of the seven continents.
