Friday Night Extra 8.5.15 An election-free zone.

It was great to be back tonight after two weeks away. I think the music early on gave a clue about where I have been. With all the non-stop election talk all day long, tonight, apart from the news bulletins, was election free. There was a segment to remember V.E. Day, and I asked where people were during the two minutes silence. All the listeners who responded had been watching the service. I was with the children at Ingatestone Juniors, where we had a street party, followed by the silence in the playground. This also lead to discussion on a recent survey that showed that many Britons do not even recognise the names of important historical figures, like William Tynedale, William Wilberforce, Oliver Cromwell or Charles Darwin. We focussed on relaxing music, particularly for those who had been up to the wee small hours. In the news stories we heard about the fans of St. Mirren F.C. voting a six year old fan with cancer as their player of the year. We also heard about the importance of pets to young children concerning emotional issues. There was a football team of illegal immigrants, formed by a Catholic Priest, that has just won promotion from the lowest league in Italian football. Their manager said “dreams do come true”. A government expert said there was a plague of e-mails in this country and this made workers unproductive by the fact they checked them all the time. I owned up I did that whilst I was away. I also paid tribute to a stranger from Phoenix Arizona, who helped me when I missed a flight in the USA when I was in distress. Along with Chay making me a cup of tea, this proved there are good people in the world.
