The Hidden Green Man in Essex Published by published by Country Books

The medieval churches of Essex house one of History’s best kept secrets. They are frequently inhabited by a mysterious carving of an ancient male head, with foliage, usually oak leaves, emerging from his mouth, ears, nose or eyes. He is surprisingly common and has many guises, concealed in nooks, roofs, sometimes barely discernable on fonts, but may also be found lurking on walls and hidden niches of churches.

The Hidden Green Man in Essex was published in 2011.  It has 49 images of this charming character. I enjoyed my time wandering around medieval churches trying to spy this mysterious and ancient icon. This was a hobby the whole family enjoyed and I’m glad that the Green Man has found his way inside this book!
