NEWS THIS WEEK

1985 – First episode of Neighbours broadcast. Neighbours has been sold to over 50 countries around the world and is one of Australia’s most successful media exports. The episode featuring Scott and Charlene’s wedding achieved the highest ever ratings for Neighbours and it became one of the highest rating soap episodes ever in Australia. The same episode attracted 20 million viewers when it was aired in the United Kingdom

1988 – The Seikan Tunnel, the longest undersea tunnel in the world, opens in Japan. Construction on the main tunnel began in September 1971. It is a 33.46 mile railway tunnel with a 14.5 miles long portion under the seabed. The track level is about 100 metres below the seabed and 240 m below sea level.
However the Channel Tunnel between the United Kingdom and France has a longer undersea portion
