Friday Night Extra 20.2.15 with guest Paul Gambling

It was great to be joined in the studio tonight by Revd. Paul Gambling, Chair of Churches Together in Billericay. Paul told us that the focus of the work for the Churches Together, representing all the churches in the town, is now on long term initiatives. This includes a long established work in all the schools, taking assemblies, being involved in pastoral care and Religious Education lessons. There are the Street Pastors, kept busy by the reality that Billericay High Street has more pubs in close proximity than other street in Essex. None of us knew that, but when you think about it, that makes sense. There was the establishment of a Credit Union, focussed very much on the initiative suggested by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Paul also brought us all a reflection on Lent, built around three pieces of classical music. This was very thought provoking and is well worth listening to again. The listeners loved his honesty. Paul stayed for the second hour, when we looked at some unusual news stories. It was amazing that Playmobil had marketed a figure of Protestant Reformer Martin Luther in Germany and had sold out of 34,000 figures in 72 hours. Those in the chatroom wished they had bought shares! We also heard about a Christian football team, said to be the worst, but also the happiest in the country. Other stories included an ornament of a cat, rescued from a skip and dated by experts to come from 500-700 B.C. from Ancient Egypt and selling at auction for £52,000 to a well known dealer. We thought he intends to sell if for considerably more.
