Friday Night Extra 13.2.15 Love is all around. Valentines Special

On a wet night in Brentwood we followed Nicky who also had a show featuring love songs. As she said in the preview, “I guess your’s will be more laid back”. The selection tonight included two songs from the new album by Diana Krall called Wallflower. There were lots of comments about her version of the 10CC classic I’m not in love. We had a number of requests tonight, including the Woody Guthrie song written in 1941, Pastures of Purity; a piece of real country performed by Alison Krauss on fiddle and sung by Dan Tyminski, guitar and mandolin player in Union Station. We heard about a backpacker from London re-united with a camera that he lost in Australia after the pictures were posted on facebook After 8000 hits he was recognised. There was the baby in Ireland delivered by a paramedic used Google Translate by the roadside to communicate with the mother in Swahili. Five year old Ruby Roberts from Newquay was given a voucher for £5 by a complete stranger in Argos because she was so polite. We heard that Valentine’s Day is associated with Saint Valentine of Rome who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians being persecuted by the Roman Empire. According to legend, before his execution he wrote a letter to the daughter of his jailer and signed it “Your Valentine” as a farewell. Finally, there was the invitation to Australia to take part in the 60th anniversary Eurovision Song Contest, as the programme in 2014 had over 3 million viewers in Australia. Apparently they will only be allowed to participate in 2016 if they win this year. I wonder…
