How a 70 year old tragedy is to be marked

IMG_0035

It was 70 years ago tomorrow  – on the 10th February 1945 – that a US airforce transport plane crashed in Brentwood. It actually crashed through the roof of a house in Broomfield Gardens, close to the junction of Kensington Road and Ongar Road.

I was joined today by Father Garry Jenkins from St George the Martyr Church, which being located on Ongar Road, is itself is very close to the crash site.

To mark this, the 70th anniversary of the incident, Father Jenkins has arranged for a requiem to be held this coming Saturday morning the 14th February at St George’s Church starting at 10am. This will be followed by a brief service of commemoration at the site of the disaster at 11am. The Mayor of Brentwood as well as a representative from the US Embassy in London will be in attendance and it is hoped that American citizens living in this area, local historians, and especially any local people who recall the incident, or heard about it from their friends and relations, will also be there on the day. Listen again to what Father Jenkins told me about the incident all those years ago by clicking on the link below: –

In the second hour of the programme we heard about another vicar, who it seems has fallen foul of her motor insurance company, after she placed some religious stickersCar insurance row on her car. Fortunately her prayers seem to have been answered as the insurance company has since backed down. They had originally suggested that her policy might be declared null and void but mercifully they have now settled her claim and waived the policy excess into the bargain!

See you again tomorrow,
